Event Summary
Michelle and James, are a very fun and loving couple. The both of them always remebered
how they instantly fell in love with each other on their first date because of the chemisty
they had. This beautiful couple, will having their wedding reception on Saturday, April 18,
2015 at The Carlu.
To commemorate the past and celebrate their new future, they want to have an Emerald
City inspired wedding. The wedding reception will be themed after the Emerald City from
the classic Wizard of Oz books and movies. Sometimes known as The City of Emeralds, this
place is the Imperial Capital of Oz and said to stand not only in the very center of Oz, but
also at the center of the universe. The city can only be found at the very end of Oz’s famous
Yellow Brick Road, leading to the emerald studded gates which is connected to the green
marble wall that surrounds the entire city. Inspired by such a wondrous and stunning
scene, this beautiful gem will be fabricated through the lighting and colour of decor
throughout the reception. The wonderful place of Emerald City will resonate through the
art deco inspired gold table decor and luxurious floral arrangements. It will be a magical
and exhilarating evening for the guests.

Michelle and James, both decided that they are getting married during the month of
April, because thats when they first met each other. It was a typical first date of dinner
and movie. Not knowing that Michelle was a big fan of the classic Wizard of Oz stories,
James had brought Michelle to go watch Oz the Great and Powerful. Within the movie,
Michelle had fell in love with the beauty of the Enchanted Forest and breathe taking
Emerald City. Michelle had always been a dreamer and wished that she would one day
be able to visit the land of Oz. James, wanting to make Michelle’s wish come true, he
had suggested that their wedding be themed after Emerald City.

The reception is themed after Emerald City from the Great and Powerful Oz movie.
Emerald City has a very art deco feel to it and is a big vow factor.
The main colours of the event are emerald and gold. To compliment and tone down such
strong main colours, I have chosen green tea, white and eggplant purple.

Venue & Floorplan
The Carlu is an historic event space in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Known for many years
as the “Eaton’s Seventh Floor”, the Carlu is one of Toronto’s best examples of Art Moderne
architecture. This architectural masterpiece, designated a National Historic Site, has been
completely restored to its original 1930s splendour and glory, while boasting the very best
in modern technology.
Michelle & Jame’s cocktail reception will be held in the Sky Room and for their dinning
reception, it will be held in the Round Room.

Accessibility
The Carlu is fully accessible. For barrier free access, enter College Park via 7 College Street
to The Carlu elevators to the 7th Floor or from the underground parking lot with College
Park.
Parking
There is underground public parking at College Park with 2 entrances; on the north side of
Gerrard Street West just east of Bay Street and one on the east side of Bay Street just north
of Gerrard Street West. Valet parking available for an additional charge.

Sky Room
The Sky Room is accessed either via The Round Room or The Grand Foyer. It may be used
as a cocktail room prior to a dinner in The Round Room or can be used separately for
ceremonies, lunches and meetings. With two large skylights and windows facing north, The
Sky Room’s clean and simple decor is bathed in light.

Grand Foyer
As guests step off the private elevators, they are transported back to an era of worldly
glamour upon entering The Carlu’s 10,000 square foot Grand Foyer. Featuring the original
monel metal finishes accenting the neutral colour palette and decorated tastefully, the
Foyer has been retrofitted to include two of the facility’s five permanent bars and now acts
as the venue’s central gathering place, welcoming patrons to the spacious Seventh Floor
while offering access to all function rooms and Concert Hall. Combined with the handsome
grandeur of the Grand Foyer, the rooms of The Carlu allow guests to entertain on any scale,
while experiencing the sophistication and elegance of its original 1930s Art Moderne style.

Round Room
The Round Room - once again the elegant and chic private function space - enjoys the fully
restored hand-painted mural masterpiece as originally painted by Natacha Carlu. The
Lalique fountain, restored to its Art Moderne splendour, enjoys its original home beneath
the frosted glass Lalique light fixture and domed cove lit ceiling. The ambiance of the era
lives on in the grace and beauty of the room, unparalleled in North America.

Room Decor
Additional decor isn’t really necessary since the shape and interior
of the room are already beautiful by itself. However, to create a
more dramatic look, emerald green uplights will be placed across
the walls of the venue to add colour and to create an Emerald City
atmosphere.

Flowers

The centrepiece will consist of three Lauren Vases at different heights.
The arragement will look very lush, as if it was overflowing and spilling out of the vases.

The bonbonneries are going to be a mini succulent
plants in a glass orb terrarium.
These bonbonneries will be place on top of the napkin
and will also act as a place card holder.

When designing the concept, I wanted to make the centrepiece very lush and grand because
the client mentioned that in the movie, she loved the magical enchanted forest as much as
Emerald City. Catering to her desire, I decided to use tall vases to create a towering look
and selected a variety types of flowers to maintain the enchanted forest feel.

The Caterer for this event is TOBEN, they are a preferred vendor for The Carlu.
Guests will enjoy a delicious 3 course meal consisting of a starter sald, entrée, and dessert.
Guests will have an additional choice of Red Wine, White Wine, and Champagne to be
served with their meal. Coffee and Tea will be served after dinner.

For entertainment, Duo d’Amore is a string ensemble that will be performing throughout

Biography
Vivian Chau has recently earned a diploma in Visual Merchandising Arts.
Wanting to further expand her knowledge of event design, she is now currently
a student at Seneca College, pursuing a graduate certificate in the Event
Management - Event and Exhibit Design program. After graduation, Vivian
plans on attaining a career as an event designer for a firm that does full
service event planning for both corporate and social events.
During the school year, she plans on getting involved with a multitude of
events. She has worked on Canada’s Walk of Fame, Arts Exposed, ROM
Centennial Gala, Toronto Fashion Week, Bloor Street Entertains and the
Premier’s Awards for Colleges Ontario. A recent event that Vivian and her
team helped design was the Ontario’s SPCA’s booth at the Baking & Sweets
Show 2014. This was to promote National Cupcake Day, which is a major
fundraising event for SPCAs & Humane Societies across Canada.
As a highly creative individual, Vivian has the ability to implement visual
guidelines to ensure that displays are effective and impressionable. She has
a strong knowledge in fabrication techniques, product styling and table top
displays achieved through years of experiences upon: creating props, floral
arrangements, off-figure and product styling. With these skills, Vivian is able
to easily transfer and apply her talents as an aspiring event designer.

Past Work
The event below was the 2014 Premier’s Awards for Colleges Ontario. I had the opportunity
to help with creating the floral centrepieces. Also, I assisted with the flip of the room and
tabletop setup.
During Bloor Street Entertains 2014, I had the pleasure of working with Tiffany & Co in
assiting with the design for their venue.

Past Work
As part of the event design group for my Visual Merchandising Arts’ year end show at
Sheridan College. The theme of the show was SpaceCraft - a futuristic style with elements
created through craft. This was a showcase of what an event may look like in the distant
future where you can only use craft techniques to create the decor elements.
