The opening title sequence of The Walking Dead establishes the post-apocalyptic setting of a deserted Atlanta through non-linear shots. It uses overhead shots of an empty freeway and deserted city streets to set the scene and raise narrative questions about what happened and where everyone went. Character introductions are framed in a way that hints at danger through broken picture frames. The sequence reinforces the themes of loneliness, devastation, panic, death and survival through its imagery and establishes the zombie genre for the show.
