EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Introduction: This study presents the results of a survey provided to attendants of the F.A.C.E.S
Red Carpet Event in November 2015. The results will be presented in a report to the New York
State Health Department. This report will be used to improve strategies that may help the
F.A.C.E.S. Program raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and the services they provide Syracuse
residents.
Methods: The data were collected from the Red Carpet Event held by the F.A.C.E.S Program in
November 2015 and was open to all residents of the City of Syracuse. At the event, surveys
were provided to all 200 participants, according to the Director of F.A.C.E.S. Of the 200
individuals in attendance, 46 responded (23%). The sample is small enough to raise questions
about whether or not this data represents all of the attendants.
Findings:
1. 64% of respondents said that “Syracuse” has the highest number of Syphilis infections.
(n=45)
2. 83% of respondents reported that the “gay male,” “single female” and “married couple”
populations are all at risk for HIV/AIDS. (n=46)
3. 61% of respondents said that they would go to a doctor, clinic or gynecologist if they needed
to “get tested for STDs, HIV/AIDS, HEP C or Syphilis.” (n=44)
4. The most frequently selected response was “HIV/AIDS Education” when describing the
services F.A.C.E.S. provides (98%). (n=44)
5. 56% of respondents indicated that they believe PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a “pill to
prevent you from contracting HIV/AIDS.” (n=43)

INTRODUCTION
This study presents the results of a survey provided to attendants of the F.A.C.E.S Red Carpet
Event in November 2015. The information collected from this study will be used to help the
Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility, Inc. F.A.C.E.S. Program continue its mission to support
the Syracuse community through “special events, outreach efforts, prevention, intervention,
employment and educational services, support, peer, and mentoring groups, and collaborative
programs.” Assembling the knowledge of attendants will allow the Syracuse Model
Neighborhood Facility to identify gaps in knowledge of sexual health in order to better educate
and support the Syracuse community.

METHODS
How Data Were Collected
Instrument Design: Survey was designed by Juhanna Rogers and other staff members of the
F.A.C.E.S. program.
Data Collection Method: The data were collected using a convenience sampling method.
Surveys were handed out to an unknown number of attendants.
Target Population and Sample: The target population consists of the estimated 200 attendants
at the F.A.C.E.S. Red Carpet Event although not every attendant received a survey. The sample
is the 48 responses that were collected (23%).
Quality of Data
Representativeness: Because of the small response rate, 23%, it is unlikely this data can be
generalized to represent the estimated 200 attendants. The target population is made up of the
individuals who attended the Red Carpet Event, which according to the Community/Peer
Organizer, was a total of 200 people. Also, because there were no questions regarding
demographic information on the surveys and no information about the demographics of the
target population, the author of this paper is not able to determine the representativeness of the
data collected.
Accuracy: The accuracy of the data presented may be compromised because of the phrasing and
format of some of the questions. For example, one question appears to be a “select all that
apply” question, but also has “all of the above” as a possible response. Additionally, one of the
survey questions had a misspelling which may have affected the way respondents answered the
survey question.
