A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Ed sheeran is an English singer songwriter and musician. Ed began music recording in
2005 and still tops charts with his albums today. Ed has two albums, plus and multiply.
Our chosen song is from Ed’s most recent album ‘Multiply’. Multiply was named the
most streamed album in the world for 2014 and it racked up more than 430 million
streams for the year. Multiply has been certified 7x Platinum in the UK with sales of over
2.1 million copies making it one of the best selling albums in the history of UK.
3. I’m a mess – 4:10
We have chosen this song because it is quite slow and relaxed however towards the end
it gets more fast paced and this is where we plan to make our narrative become more
intense. This is ideal due to the time and setting we are planning on using. The song has
parts of instrumental meaning our narrative can carry on through the song without the
singer needing to be on screen. This song doesn’t have a video which means it is perfect
as we can create our own narrative.
4. Due to our song having some instrumental in it, we have decided that our main singer is
going to be playing instruments when he is in the shots whilst singing. We have decided
this because it is similar to what Ed Sheeran does himself. Although our singer is not
going to be in a lot of the narrative, we want to have separate shots which cut up the
narrative so that it is not too continuous. We want our singer to play a guitar like Ed does
when singing this in acoustic performances. During Ed’s performances of this song, he
does not have a band with him as it is mainly just his guitar.
The name for our singer is going to be Danny Chambers. This name has been completely
chosen at random however we think it fits quite well. It is a unique as we are not aware
of anybody else with this name in music at the minute.
5. Meaning of some lyrics
Oh I'm a mess right now
Inside out
Searching for a sweet surrender
But this is not the end
I can't work it out
How going through the motions
Going through us
Going through a break up
and reflecting on the
relationship
I messed up this time
Late last night
Drinking to suppress devotion
With fingers intertwined
I can't shake this feeling now
We're going through the motions
Hoping you'd stop
He knows it is his fault and
wants her to forgive him.
6. See the flames inside my eyes
It burns so bright I wanna' feel your love
Easy baby maybe I'm a liar
But for tonight I wanna' fall in love
Put your faith in my stomach
Kind of saying for her to trust
him this time and that he is
aware of what he has previously
done.
Now now, for how long, long I love my lover
(and I feel loved)
Now now, for how long, long I love my lover
I feel it all over now, now and I feel loved
Now now, for how long, long I love my lover
Feel it all over now, now, and I feel loved
Now now, for how long, long I love my lover
Feel it all over now, now, and I feel loved
Questioning the relationship
length and saying he wants
it to carry on but not sure how
long it will last.
7. Narrative ideas
There has been a breakup and it was his fault. It shows the aftermath of both sides and
how she is coping and he isn’t. The boy is depressed about his actions and therefore
drinks to get over her and supress devotion to her but this doesn’t work and he turns up
at her house when drunk and see’s her with someone else just as they are about to leave
the house and go for what looks like a meal. In the end, he looks at videos/pictures of
them two when happy (properly on screen). In the very end after the videos, the boy
gets hit by car and it fades to the singer singing the final two lines. The audience never
know the boy’s fate as the video fades out.
8. Performance ideas
Our ideas so far are that we want to film most of our music video outdoors. We have
ideas of doing our video in a variety of places:
• On a stage for when the singer is in the video
• House
• Outdoors such as on a bridge, in the streets, in the backtracks, old railway tracks
For our video, we are going to have parts of the video where Liam sings. Liam is going to
be our singer and he will be on a stage with a guitar for parts in which we do not include
the narrative. For our narrative, we are going to include two boys and one girl.
9. Brief requirements
Singer – We want our singer to be dressed in casual clothing to match Ed Sheeran and
what he does for his own music videos. We need our singer to hold a guitar because
within the whole of Ed’s performance, Ed plays the guitar therefore it is important that
our singer does the same. Our singer is going to be located on a stage with lights focused
on him.
First boy actor (going through breakup) – In our narrative, this boy is depressed
therefore we need to dress him to show this. We are going to dress him in black dull
clothing maybe like a black hoody and black jeans as we feel this colour represents
dullness and anxiety. We want this actor to be holding old drink bottles and have old
tablet packets around him as we feel this shows how depressed he is. It also links with
the song lyrics.
Second boy actor (new partner of the girl) – Our second actor is going to be dressed in
smart clothing such as a shirt. We wanted to do this because the new partner needs to
look better than the old depressed partner. It would then hurt the ex even more because
he will feel replaced with something g a lot better.
10. Brief requirements
Girl actor – We want our girl to be dressed nicely. This is to show that she is the opposite
of her ex in a way that she is not depressed and that she has gotten over him. The girl
could wear smart to show how she is getting on with her life. Props could include flowers
which she received from the boy.
11. Potential camera shots
For our music video, we need to include some camera shots which show the mood and
type of people that we are videoing. We could include some:
High angle shots – This would show that everything is getting on top of the depressed
boy and this will emphasise on his current state.
Low angle shots – This could be used on the new couple as they are happy and above
the depressed boy. This could be from his point of view as he see’s them currently above
him.
Crane shot – Show the end of the video when the boy gets hit and it would be similar to
a fade to black if we go into the black dark sky.
