Tracy Edwards and her all-female crew participated in the 1989 Whitebread Round the World Yacht Race. They refurbished a 58-foot yacht named Maiden and set off from the starting line on September 2, 1989. Though the male crews of other yachts had new boats that required no work, Edwards and her crew completed the race, coming in first on two of the six legs and finishing second in their class. Their achievement in completing the grueling race helped advance opportunities for women in sailing.
