This book follows 12-year-old Jutta, a Jewish girl living in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Written in poem format, the book tells Jutta's story through entries in her autograph book as she experiences increasing persecution from the Nazis. As conditions worsen for Jews, Jutta witnesses her friends leaving and her father's business being shut down. Eventually, Jutta and her family are able to purchase tickets on a ship to America, though they do not yet have visas. The book leaves the reader wondering whether Jutta escaped Germany or what might have happened to her family.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

personal accounts of history?
Do you enjoy reading
books that are written
in poem format?
You will LOVE this
book!
3. Jutta is a twelve-year-old girl living in the
City of Hamburg
Did I mention?
Jutta is Jewish
She is living in Hiter's Nazi Germany where the Nazis hate the Jews
with a power so strong
In this book, we follow Jutta’s journey through this time period by reading
her poesiealbum, which is her autograph book, with inscriptions, verses,
and drawings about her experiences.
4. "A true story of friendship, family, and farewells“
Stories of their experiences through writing in their journal.
A year of change and chance… confusion and cruelty… friendship, family,
and farewells…
This is the story of Jutta and her family told through poems and promises,
wishes and warnings, names and dates
Remembrances from Jutta's friends and relatives are the way the chapters
are introduced, written in verse form, that describe her experiences
5. 1933 - Adolf Hitler came to power in
Germany. Hitler and his political party, the
Nazi Party made hatred of Jews.
Anyone who was a member of what the
Nazis called the Jewish "race" was
considered less than fully human.
Hitler's goals was to create a nation that
was Judernrein - without Jews.
6. Each entry is made by a friend
They are giving messages of hope to
succeed and to go to better places
7. Do you wish to roam so far?
Look, the good is near.
Just learn to seize luck,
And luck will always be here.
Jutta wasn’t able to live a normal childhood. She was afraid to roam the
streets. She was afraid of being pushed off the sidewalk, afraid of
German boys throwing rocks at her, she soon wasn’t allowed to leave
her house.
8. Will is power.
"It' courage. It's strength. It's seeing the
Nazi hate everywhere - it's feeling the Nazi
hate and laughing with your girlfriends
anyway."
Jutta feels the pain of friends leaving her. She is just a child living in a
time where war and hatred is destroying her family, her friends, and
her childhood.
9. Let God be the beginning.
Let God be the end.
This is the best course in life.
Law Against the Overcrowding of German
Schools, which aims to exclude Jews from
public schools.
Jutta wasn't able to go to city schools anymore.
She was only able to enroll in the Jewish
School for girls.
10. May three angels be with you through all your life, and
the angels I mean are love, luck, and happiness
Things will get better
Angel of Happiness – “I hope that she will find me wherever I
end up”
Jutta wonders what’s next. Will they leave? Will they
ever be safe again? She turns to her angels and
hope they guide her and her family in the right
direction.
11. Do not cause your father any worries,
Do not cause your mother any pain,
For you do not know if tomorrow
Such dear hearts will pass away.
Jutta's father, Isaac Salzberg, is forced to shut down his business
because he is Jewish
Nazi police conduct mass arrests of Jews throughout Germany.
Many were arrested and imprisoned in concentration camps. Nazi
police begin to invade homes throughout Germany and round up
thousands of Jews.
12. If you have a task to do,
It is best to act fast – delay not!
When you have a thought, write it down.
Strike while the iron is hot!
• They bought tickets for a passage on a ship that will take them away to America.
• It is a lovely ship and they can’t wait to leave.
• One big problem?
• They don’t have American visas to get there…
13. Hear much, say little.
Do not complain to everyone.
Steadfast in misfortune and in fortune,
These are true masterpieces.
Jutta hears too much of what is going on but she doesn’t know what to say,
or what to do.
She wonders where she will be next ?
Will she be on a boat with a royal name?
Or on a truck filled with unwanted Jews?
14. Did Jutta and her family leave Germany?
Did they ever arrive to America?
Where did they end up next?
15. * “An outstanding and emotionally taut read. . . .”—School
