We spent our first filming session in the studio experimenting with different lighting arrangements and camera shots to establish a style for our music video. Four adjustable studio lights were positioned behind the drummer to create a silhouette effect with dark tones. We explored different camera positions around the drummer to get varied shots without moving the lights. A spotlight was also tested to create silhouette effects for singing parts and to add more style, though it did not fit the music genre well. Overall we were able to film different shots and angles to use without significantly changing the lighting setup.

1. The Studio
In order to achieve the best effects within our music
video, we spent most of our first session in the filming
studio trying out different possible arrangements in terms
of lighting and camera in order to create different shot
compositions, which would help create a style to our
video.
Lighting
In the filming studio, there were four adjustable studio lights.
We positioned these lights at different heights and spaced them
out behind, so that they created a
silhouette effect over the drummer.
This hid the drummers face and
created an overall dark tone within the
clip. We will then use this to contrast with the bright vibrant clips
when we film outdoors. When we had set up these lights we
decided to explore the possible shots we could use, within this
particular composition. We created these different shots by positioning the camera in
different positions around the drummer. From these shots we learnt that we didn’t have to
move all of the lighting around the studio in order to create
different effects and by moving the camera around the lights, we
could create more shots that would fit the style of our video. There
was also a spotlight in the studio, which we also experimented with,
in order to try and create more possible shots. We started off by
creating a silhouette effect on a face, which we could the use for
the vocal parts of the video, since we want the singers to be
anonymous. We then pointed this light around the room, to try and
see what effect this would have on the shots and whether it
would add more style to video clips. Even though we liked the
colours involved with the shot and we liked the aged effect,
the light created, we decided that it did not fit our music
genre enough and for the studio, it was too light. However, we
still liked the silhouette effect we created earlier and then
decided to try and add this to the shot to the current set up.
This worked quite well and we then started filming
Camera
In the studio there were different cameras and equipment we could
use for our video. For our first session in the studio we used a Canon
EOS 550D and a basic tripod. We set up the camera in different
locations and positions around the studio in order to get different
shots without changing the layout of the lights and drums. We then
started filming and we were happy with the results however we
realized that filming was very time consuming and therefore we
need to plan effectively when planning our film.
Outside of the studio, each of us filmed a time lapse.
