Monotony film proposal
1. Monotony film proposal
Synopsis:
Jack is a student caught up in a monotonous work cycle he can’t seem to
break, eventually his relief from this comes to him. Actually, it’s more accurate
to say it dropped through his letterbox, this leaflet advertises a chance to
better the community by cleaning the local cemetery which has faced neglect.
However, what he finds while cleaning is more intense than litter. And as the
old saying goes, curiosity killed the cat. Or in this case it killed the innocent
student looking to do some good.
Logline: Monotony is a drama/thriller about a tired student who in his attempt
to find something positivein his life ends up unearthing some dangerous,
rather bloodied, secrets of the pastbest left hidden which eventually ends up
in his own death.
Screenplay structure:
Act 1: Jack suffers in his repetitive routine and when given the opportunity, he
takes on some community service in a local graveyard. Hebegins to spend his
days doing odds tasks like cleaning benches and tidying up litter.
Act 2: While doing his tasks oneday, Jack encounters some blood-soaked
clothes and a knife hidden away in a corner of the graveyard which clearly look
old. Thinking nothing of it and cautious of it being fake, he calls the police. Not
long after he begins to find somethreatening notes.
Act 3: While heading home one night after he finished his tasks, he encounters
the man who hid the old evidence. And before he can properly look at them,
he is shot.
Characters:
Jack (protagonist): A hard working studentlooking to changeup his routine
and improvehis emotional state, finding happiness in community service.
Unknown man (antagonist): A man looking to hide the old skeletons in his
closet, willing to go to any length to stop those secrets from being unearthed.
Police stationsecretary: A very minor character Jack speaks on the phone to
when reporting his findings.
2. Filmtreatment: Jack is a studentwho seems to live the same day constantly,
forced to follow the samemind-numbing schedule on repeat. Eventually these
feelings of anger and annoyancefester until one day a leaflet gets posted
through his door, it advertises an opportunity to clean up the local cemetery
which has been recently neglected and left uncleaned. After reading about this
opportunity he takes a moment to consider his options, whether to stay
miserable as he is now, or to take this offer and head off to something new in
his life.
He ends up enjoying this, finding somekind of odd happiness that probably
shouldn’tbe found when one is cleaning up litter in a graveyard. Nevertheless,
Jack happily carries out these tasks over the courseof a few days. Until one
day, when he is cleaning up near somegreenery and finds both a blood
covered shirt and a knife. Itis clear when looking at these that the blood isn’t
fresh and they aren’tnew, not knowing whatelse to do he calls the police.
After the incident he attempts to carry on with his newfound routine, this
proves difficult when he finds trash piled up in one spotand a note warning
him of the consequences of his actions. Ignoring them warnings, heheads
home one night and encounters a stranger. Turning around to ask why they
seem to be following him, he’s met with a gun. And before he can ask any
more questions on the matter, he ends up shotdead.
Target audience: My envisaged audience is those between the ages of 15-19, I
know this becausemy character is of a similar age and struggles with some
very relatable problems in life. Young people like media products with
characters and narratives they can identify with, struggling to find happiness in
such a lifestyle like his is an issuemany of them will face. This is my unique
selling point, a film with both drama and emotions the audience can relate to.
