9. Budget
2.5Million
Sinister — The best of the recent run of low-budget
horror films, costing $3 million to make and returning a
healthy $87.7 million at the box office. A perfect
example of keeping it simple, with mostly one location
and a half-dozen characters, relying on atmosphere and
tension for top-notch scares.
Insidious was released in 2011, and
was created on a budget of $1.5
million. It went on to gross $97
million in the box office.
The genre I have chosen for my Film is Horror, because I believe that it is most likely to appeal to a larger audience. The codes and conventions included in the film to make it a horror are;
Chase Sequences
There will be dark scenes in the film, creating a tense and dangerous atmosphere
With a usage of weapons, as the murder weapon in the film is going to be a knife
Additional Religious elements
My Film Plot is going to feature a teenager called matt and his friends, from the mental hospital that they’re kept at. Matt is a sufferer of Bipolar and Schizophrenia. When a the group are on a walk in the woods, accompanied by a mental health nurse, they walk right into a murder scene. The film will cover the story of matt and his friends and how the murder effects them, but will mainly focus on matt’s story. As the character suffers sleeping problems, it is clear to the audience that his previous demon has come back to haunt him, however at the end of the film the discovery is made that none of this has actually occurred and this is all an illusion for matt, from the voices in his head, but hes trapped in his fake reality until someone can save him.
The director I have chosen to direct my film is James Wan. The reason behind this is he has directed many successful horror films, meaning mine would probably turn out the same. James Wan is able to offer a unique opinion on the film and assure that it is a creepy horror film. Also by having a well known director to direct my film, it means that people will be influenced to watch my film if they have previously seen his work.
To play my main character, I have chosen the actor Matt Lanter. As the character has mental disabilities, it means I won’t need to pick anyone with a visible disability. Matt Lanter can be seen as an attractive person, which will influence female viewers to come and watch the film and additionally give males the aspirations to be him as he would have a lot of female attention. He's also a good choice for the movie as he's previously appeared in other teenage TV programmes ect, which can allow the film to gain more viewers. So he's a Unique Selling Point.
Tom Felton will be the mental health nurse that won’t be a large character in the film, but appears quite a lot. He is a good person to have in the film due to his previous acting experience in harry potter. It will influence others to watch it if a big name is in the film. I believe that from viewing him in Harry Potter, Tom will be able to introduce the eerie element that the film will need to continue to push it into the horror genre.
William Moseley will be my main characters demon in the film to haunt him in his low times. All the actors I have chosen have had a lot of experience in acting over the years, which I am hoping will help my film to be really good. William was in Narnia which is a well known film, this can also lead to my film having more attention because of him. I have purposely done this so that my film will become popular, hopefully be liked and then finally become successful.
The target audience for my film is going to be teenagers and young adults. Reasons behind this is currently the younger generations like teenagers have young adults have firstly access to social media. This means that a larger amount of people are able to be aware of the film and will most likely to be influenced to watch it if they see other peoples opinions on it. Females will most likely watch the film because of the typical ‘hot’ male lead, but because the girls are most likely going to talk it creates attention for the film which is needed.
Key codes and conventions of the genre horror creates a target audience of those who purely like the genre horror as they will take an interest in wanting to watch the film. There are a variety of horror films out there, which means there will be a lot of pressure on the director to make this film original and able to stand out against the rest.
Girl interrupted is about females in a mental institution. It is similar to mine in this way, except my film features males in a mental hospitals, but they both contain the features of mental disabilities. Girl interrupted however is classed as a Biographical film. Where as mine is going to be a horror film so there aren’t very many horror codes and conventions in that film, but a few gory scenes that can be linked partially towards mine. The conjuring is a horror film, which is linked to mine by genre, alternatively this one focusses on the spiritual side of horror in contrast to mine that only slightly brings the idea into it. The similarities to the conjuring my film will have is the usage of trees on the film posters. Although trees themselves are rather simple, with a darkened atmosphere it will help to create and intense mysterious atmosphere on the poster, which can then influence people to watch the film as it gives the impression that’s what my whole film is going to be like.
For my Budget I have chosen to compare it to other horror genres to get an idea. The older films seem to cost the most when you look at them, and as mine is a newer film I've decided to have a lower profit. I’m aiming around 2.5 Million. James Wan was the director of Insidious and if he’s able to make that film successful with $1.5 million, I believe allowing him more money gives him more freedom with the movie to improve it and make it more successful than other low budget films. I think I’m able to do this successfully as my film is going to have a low amount of characters in it and is limited to two locations of a woods and a mental hospital. As the woods would be chosen selectively to give the correct eerie atmosphere it means you wont have to put as much money into more sets and other things to make the film successful.
For my release date, I had to consider my target audience. As I’m the film at teenagers and young adults, I wanted the release date to be accessible for everyone and in order to do this I think that the release date should be on a Friday night in the summer holidays of 2016. However I wanted my film to be released on Friday 13th to give the film a more creepy enjoyable element to it. So to conclude I've chosen the release date to be Friday 13th May 2016.
