1. Institution Research
Horror films aren’t the most popular genre but they are about mid ranged in
the top grossing genres from 1995 to 2012 as horror films hold the number
seven spot with 329 movies during this time space and a total grossing of
$9,093,205,812 with an average gross of $27,638,923.
The most popular genres at the moment going off their total grossing are
comedy with the number one spot, adventure in second place then drama in
third. Re releases are now becoming more popular as the number one movie
of 2013 is estimated to be re release of the Texas chainsaw massacre in 3D.
But despite the big movies in 2012 like The Avengers and The Dark Knight
Rises, summer 2012 saw the lowest box office returns since 1993, an
explanation of this is the increase of internet piracy which is said to be “killing
Hollywood”.
Horror films are averaging a gross of $27,638,923. There are a number of
different horror film distributers that have had success since 2004 four like:
Sony Pictures who made fourteen percent of all the horrors made from 2004
to 2012; the studio with highest percentage is Lionsgate with twenty percent
of the distributions. Just below that is Warner Brothers who had nineteen
percent of the distributions. Weinstein/Dimension are the lowest with 1.3
percent of the top grossing distributors.
