This document summarizes how the media producer's film "Nothing Lasts Forever" uses and develops conventions of real romantic drama films. Some conventions it follows include:
1) Using established institutions like Warner Bros. to distribute the film and appeal to wider audiences.
2) Following narrative conventions of popular romance films that portray true love, illness/disability, and dealing with loss.
3) Using common settings, camera techniques, editing styles and lighting seen in romance films to immerse the audience and tell the story effectively.
The document discusses various elements that are commonly used in romantic films to set the mood and tell the story, including music, setting, props, costumes, and stock characters. Music in romantic films usually features emotional tunes to enhance sad scenes and upbeat songs for happy moments. Settings like theaters and locations where couples spend time together help set the romantic tone. Props like boats and love letters provide insight into the nature of characters' relationships. Costumes can convey information about a character's age and personality. Common stock characters in romantic films include a ditsy female lead, a handsome funny male lead, a best friend, and a father figure for the main character.

Deconstructing a trailer in powerpointEmmaBoucher3
The document summarizes a student project to remake the children's show "Postman Pat" into a horror/thriller trailer for teenagers. It will tell the story of a postman who delivers body parts instead of packages. The trailer will feature two girls who come across the case of a severed finger being delivered to the mayor. It will include plot twists and clues leading to a cliffhanger ending, engaging audiences until the full film's release in 2021. The student filmmakers plan to cast themselves and friends in the roles and film in local village locations, using camera filters, transitions and shots to make it look professionally made.
2. Basic Concepts
Genre Romantic drama/ Chick-Flick; the main
themes/issues centring around separation, choices and
‘star-crossed lovers’
Characters Male and Female lead - to be casted
- Male – Nick
- Female – Ellie
- The film will apply both viewpoints from the both
characters instead of just one.
Target Audience and Suitability Target group for
around 16-25 year olds, will be heavily marketed
towards female, but it is suitable for male as well.
Budget £500,000 - Not including SFX or stunts that
require a bigger budget
3. The Film Itself….
Story/Plot Based around the two leads (both students)
who meet each other either, but soon have to be parted
once more. They film entails their ability to overcome
the obstacle of distance and separation. The ending of
the film trailer will therefore leave out clarity of their
future.
-They spend all summer with each other, but it soon
comes to an end when they must return to university or
college in different parts of the country.
-One of the characters come over to England to visit a
relative or for a holiday and has to go home.
-One of the characters must move away to another part
of the country or another country because of parents'
jobs or work.
4. Locations and Settings…
I want to make full use of the Shropshire countryside
and I feel it will give the film a dreamy and romantic
touch. I want to empathise the fact the film is British
and to show off the British Landscapes.
Lilleshall – this location offers many different scenery
options, including the monument and the abbey.
Granville Country Park – a close and secluded location
that will allow pretty woodland scenes without the hustle
and bustle of traffic.
Ironbridge – A beautiful historical site that will give the
film an authentic and idealistic feel. Distance and travel
will have to be taken into account.
5. Mise en scene…
Time Present day, but has a classical and historical feel
to, empathising the traditional idea of courtship and love.
Season Unfortunately, British weather is very
unpredictable, but it should appear to be around August/
early September. If weather does not permit, the film’s
setting will be around February/May time.
Props The use of mobile phones to show exchanging of
messages and voicemails between the characters once
they have parted.
Costumes On trend fashion, typical style for the ages of
the characters. Use of coats to keep the actors warm
whilst on set and filming.
6. Costumes…floating skirts/dresses, to
Female – Frilly and
convey innocence and feminism. Use of neutral
colours so as not stereotype the character’s
tastes or interests.
Male – Casual jeans and tops – may make use
of a jacket to put around the girl’s shoulders
as a common romantic gesture. Again, no
major costume choices so as to not stereotype
the character. By doing this, it gives a bigger
audience range, as they can associate with the
characters.
7. Inspiration…
The 2011 winner of the
Sundance film festival, Like
Crazy is a Romantic Drama
based around long distance
relationships.
Directed by Drake Doremus
and loosely based on some of
his own experiences with his
ex-wife.
It was filmed with an
inexpensive Canon EOS 7D
DSLR camera
The budget did not exceed
$250,000
A really interesting fact is that
Yelchin and Jones attended a
rehearsal session before
filming which was done
without a script. The film also
fully improvised dialogue
between the two leads.
8. Imagery
I came across this website
for an Australian wedding
photographer and instantly
loved these images! I love
the use of the low sun and
creating sun rays and halos
to frame the picture. I also
love how many of the
poses in the images are
very modest and
natural, just how I would
want my actors to feel
when being filmed.
I also think that the feel
and style of these images
mirror the film I have
been researching ‘Like
Crazy’.
