The Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University was created in 1990, formally recognizing fifty years of informal cooperation between the two universities. The geographic proximity of the campuses—just nine miles apart—greatly encourages and facilitates regular collaboration among faculty and students. The UNC and Duke Consortium has received major funding from the Andrew W. Mellon, Ford, and Tinker Foundations. Since 1991 it has been designated a Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) by the U.S. Department of Education.
As part of the 2013 Wear It! campaign, the National Safe Boating Council provided approximately $30,000 in resources and funding to 14 groups nationwide to help promote the campaign in their communities.
The North American Safe Boating Campaign and this project are produced and supported under a grant from the Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Photography students studied landscape traditions from 17th C. paintings to modern photography to understand ways that cultures frame ideas and ideals of landscape. They researched student exhibitions from Australia to plan a school exhibition. On a field trip to the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge they composed images that explored their own definitions and perspactives of framing landscape. They titled their exhibition: "[re}Defining Landscape" to reflect the many ways we use, abuse, and understand the landscapes around us.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Sea Grant’s Telling Tide Selectedfor Beneath the Waves Film Festival
The Telling Tide, an hour-long video directed by Darcy Wilkins and produced by the Louisiana
Sea Grant College Program, has been accepted into the Beneath the Waves Film Festival.
“Coastal erosion, subsidence, sea level rise, climate change, channelization, levees: Louisiana’s
coast is washing away, and with it, the vibrant cultures that have evolved and thrived there,” said
Wilkins, who was a research associate with Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) when the film was
produced.
“Through oral history interviewing, four high schools along the coast were invited to participate
in a one-year oral history project that aimed to engage students in scrutinizing their community
heritage, the land they have grown up on, the reasons behind Louisiana land loss, and what they
stand to lose as Louisiana continues to lose ground. The film incorporates their work and
documents what Louisiana stands to lose.”
Beneath the Waves Film Festival was established in 2009 by Austin Gallagher and Erica
Staaterman. The goal for Beneath the Waves is to inform people about the issues that the oceans
