The film "Just the Two of Us" portrays the relationship between Hendrix Reid and his girlfriend Charlie Lawrence through Hendrix's conversations with his doctor. It uses techniques like jump cuts between the voiceover and conversation scenes to imply that Hendrix is recounting a story to his doctor rather than directly addressing the audience. Key scenes like one where Charlie reacts uncomfortably to Hendrix pouring wine were filmed with high key lighting to allow the audience to interpret her expressions and foreshadow Hendrix's erratic behavior without dialogue. The film was inspired by other short films and aimed to create a preferred reading of disgust by implying Hendrix murdered Charlie but escaped punishment by framing it as a fantasy in therapy.

Film evaluation
Introduction
The idea in “Just the two of us” was to visually portray a youngmalenamed Hendrix Reid (which changed to
female due to circumstance),and a young CharlieLawrence (Hendrix girlfriend) relationship through Hendrix’s
conversations with his Doctor “Just the two of us” is directly linked with the theme “revelation” I have taken
inspiration fromthe shortfilm“slap”and “Ellington kid”
first,I am going to be evaluatingthe
cinematography the sequence. is the
“murder sequence” all shots were
filmed by usingthe rule of thirds to
make surethe shots framed equally. I
used extreme closeups to capture
important facial expressionsall shots
were cut quickly in this sequenceso I
could round the issues of censorships
as I would not of been ableto show an
graphic murder scene how I did was in
shots likethe hands round the next I used high key lightingto showthe muscle in the hands were tensed s o as
to the keep the scene authentic I chose not to use a sound track or any diegetic sound as itwould make the
scene too graphic,Shot durations were shortscenes likethe one above. Which was only half a second long
then it cuts to an extreme closeup of Hendrix eyes which was importantto capture strain in his faced and the
expression then it cuts to mid shotof Hendrix pickingup drinkingthe bottle whilstthe camera slowly pans
down towards the ground were we see Charliejustin frame this was done again to get round censorship
issues.I had taken inspiration fromthe “Ellington kid”as the way dan sully showed stabbingscenehe didn’t
show itin detail have mid shot in high key lightingfrom the sideof the boy then it cuts to mid shot from,
behind the assailantof the boys expression this was effect as it is key to the structure of the narrativeitalso
got round the censorship.
The use of lightingin “justthe two of us” is an essential element which increased the meaning and developed
the narrative.I used a POV centred high key lightingmid shot of Hendrix lookingat Charlie itthen cuts to a
shot behind Hendrix lookingatCharlie, but she is busy
fillingup her glass. This was filmed in high key lighting
because itgave a high-quality pictureof the characters
facial expression,as this was a crucial element for the
narrativeas Hendrix facial expression show he is
contempt and happy, whilstCharlies expressionsshowa
person who doesn’t want to be there. My decision in
doingthis is to manipulatethe spectator’s responseand
change how they view the scene. this is thatCharlie
doesn’t want to be havingdinner with Hendrix by
showingthe audience this is doneto foreshadow the
upcoming conflictbetween Hendrix and Charlie.The
significantof this sequence is that itis purposely done to
represent the of the story being the unhappy girlfriend
that wants out and the man who is blissfully unaware,of
what is goingto happen this has been done in
accordanceof havinga revelation in the filmwhich has been foreshadowed by Charlies actions. This has again
been inspired by one of the set short films this timebeing “Slap” were in the open sequence we have an over
the shoulder.Closeup in high key lightingthe durations of this shotis very it is about1:30min the shot shows
Connor putting on make up in the mirror this foreshadowlater events in the filmof Connor being a drag
queen, italso shows his dad nearly catchinghimwearingmakeup which shows that his dad is unawareof what

Connor situation justlikein my short filmwere Hendrix is unawareof how Charliefeels this has helped me to
expand and play with the narrative.
The use of editing was crucial to tellingthe story’s narrativethrough Hendrix’s conversion with the Doctor I
demonstrated this by havingdirectcuts from the voiceover, sequences to conversion that Hendrix was having
with the Doctor I showed this by havinga over the shoulder shotin high key lightingof the Dr saying“Hendrix
the story” then to an extreme closeup of Hendrix saying“I am so sorry Dr I truly am…my” then it has straight
jump cut back into the voiceover sequences. This has been done to show the audiencethat itis not Hendrix
tellingyou directly a story!it’s the audiencelisteningto his conversion with his Doctor this has been made,
evident by usingjump cuts itmanipulates how the audienceinterprets the story. I wanted to represent
Hendrix as a patient of a doctor this is key to the narrativeand the development of Hendrix’s character.By
using narrated flashbacks, ithelps to remind the audience why Hendrix is havingtherapy with his doctor even
though this is notrelieved till later but is foreshadowed. This again was likethe Ellington kid as I had taken
influencefrom the use of the jump cuts from the kebab shotscenes then to the ellipsisof the boy being
stabbed, I admired the way that helped to develop the narrativeof the story.
When itcomes to the use of sound in “just the two of us” I wasn’t sure to add sound effects/ soundtrack or to
use diegetic sound,I decided to only use diegetic sound as I wanted to represent the filmas authentic and
believable.which was important as the representation usingdiegetic sound through out the duration of the
filmcontributed significantly to the revelation later in the film. This gave added effect to the narrativeand the
theme “revelation” as itsolely relied on the narrativeand the doctors monologue which narrated the ellipsis.I
had taken influencefrom the shortfilm“Slap” as we see a closeup shot high key lightingof Connor on the
stairs dressed in draglisten to Archie atthe door pleadingfor himto open the us e of diegetic and non-diegetic
sound without the use of soundtrack convinced me that this would help give added meaning to my film.
Now one aspectthat was essential to my filmwas the miseen scene due the making of the filmI put a lot of
attention focusingon the mis en scene, as the establishingshotwas a mid-shotin high key lightingof a dinner
table set up with mats plates wine bottle 2 wine glass and cutlery. The effect of doingthis was to firmly
establish thescene and where the
narrativeof the story was going to be
based around this enabled me to
create a story around the use of using
my ellipsisand flashbacks throughout
the film.the representation that it
was trying to achieve was simplea
dinner table set for two this allows
the audience to startto create a
preferred readingas they would
associatea dinner tablefor two with
wine set out to be lovingand

romantic which was the opposite that was going to happen givingthe revelation a greater effect on the
audience. This was inspired by the “Ellington kid”I admired how the director Dan Sully was ableto tell the
story through Nathans, conversion with his friend over a kebab shop tableby usinga voiceovers and ellipsis.I
mirrored this by havingHendrix tell the story through conversations with his Dr which voice-over, the events
that happened whileHendrix was havingdinner with Charlie.
Finally I amgoingto evaluate is the performance of the actors in “justthe two of us” the particular sceneI am
going to be focusingon is an over the shoulder of shot of Charliereactingto Hendrix poringa access amountof
wine into his cup this scene
was filmed in high key
lighting this is importantas
Charlies movement of her
head coming forward
suggest that this is not like
Hendrix. This decision I
made for Charlieto do was
to foreshadowthe erratic
nature that Hendrix posses
at points,this will affectthe
audiencereadingof the
situations as they canthere
any dialogueas the voiceover is being played they really on Charliereaction which is surprised so this indicate
to the audiencethat something is wrong with Hendrix allowingthe audienceto have a preferred readingas
this represents a wide variety of possibility to imagineis Hendrix an alcoholic ? Why is he so nervous what has
he done? I got inspiration fromthis froma scene the Ellington kid where we have a closeup in high key lighting
of the armed assailant,he pulls down his facemask this allowed the audienceto have their own preferred
readingthis is what I wanted to replicate.
Overall,I achieved what I set out to which was to create and filmabout a set of conversations thatHendrix
have with his doctor using ellipsisand voiceover. The preferred readingthat I intended the audienceto have
was one of disgustwhich I believed I had achieved as a man had murdered his girlfriend, but the guilthad
turned into fantasy,so he escaped his punishment. Improvements I would make would be the continuity as
certain scenes had areas were the Celinewas showingand I had to crop the shots which made some look
messy and un professional.
