Sickle cell disease causes acute and chronic pain that significantly reduces quality of life. While opioids have been the standard treatment for sickle cell pain for decades, they have significant risks and limitations. There is a need to better understand sickle cell pain and develop new multidisciplinary treatments that improve outcomes and reduce reliance on opioids.
