SCHEDULE--Drafting Phase
First Draft:
You write a first draft identifying one rhetorical devices or one figure of speech in one of the six given texts and develop it as the thesis or focus of your literary analysis. Then you evaluate the draft through peer review and by the Writing Center to ensure that you successfully achieve a close critical reading and write persuasively about the literary text. This is highly recommended. The student will print 1 copy for peer review. First draft is due on Wed, 03/18/15.
Second draft:
You produce a second draft reflecting changes in the first draft from peer review and instructor review. You bring one (1) copy of the second draft to class for peer edit. Second draft is due on Wed, 03/25/15.
Final Drafting Phase
You produce a final draft reflecting editing changes from the second draft. No outside materials or sources are used to write this paper. You turn in the first draft from peer review and the second draft from peer edit plus any drafts from a writing tutor in class or to the instructor’s mailbox in A 310 by 3:00 pm on the final draft due date. Description of the Assignment
An additional core activity of literary scholars is being conversant in the extant criticism in the
field of one’s study, which means knowing how other literary scholars interpret the same texts
and authors that you have read. This assignment is designed to help you become more conversant
in the criticism of one of the short story authors whom we have read during this term. To
complete it, you will compile an annotated bibliography of at least five items of scholarly literary
criticism and then write a review essay to identify connections and more thoroughly describe the
conversation on the author.
As a refresher, an annotated bibliography is a list of sources on a subject in which each item is
accompanied with an annotation, which is a summary of the source’s thesis, central claims, and
most significant support or evidence. Many professional scholars keep these as part of their notes
(I try to keep a running, informal annotated bibliography of sources I encounter in my research).
While this annotated bibliography should be treated as a formal academic assignment, it can
serve as a model for what you should always do informally in your research.
A review essay looks at a group of recent publications in a specific field of literary scholarship in
an effort to show how recent criticism is in conversation and describe the direction that the field
is headed. They are typically published in the book review section of scholarly journals.
Having experience writing both an annotated bibliography and a review essay is important
because it will not only help you to practice some of the skills you will need to have and deploy
independently in other literature courses, like Senior Seminar, but in graduate school should you
choose to go that route. These skills transfer to other research applications, too.
Guidelines for the Annotated Bibliography portion:
You must focus on one author who is on our syllabus this term.
You must annotate at least five sources from the last five years. Consult me if you have

Description of the Assignment
An additional core activity of literary scholars is being conversant in the extant criticism in the
field of one’s study, which means knowing how other literary scholars interpret the same texts
and authors that you have read. This assignment is designed to help you become more conversant
in the criticism of one of the short story authors whom we have read during this term. To
complete it, you will compile an annotated bibliography of at least five items of scholarly literary
criticism and then write a review essay to identify connections and more thoroughly describe the
conversation on the author.
As a refresher, an annotated bibliography is a list of sources on a subject in which each item is
accompanied with an annotation, which is a summary of the source’s thesis, central claims, and
most significant support or evidence. Many professional scholars keep these as part of their notes
(I try to keep a running, informal annotated bibliography of sources I encounter in my research).
While this annotated bibliography should be treated as a formal academic assignment, it can
serve as a model for what you should always do informally in your research.
A review essay looks at a group of recent publications in a specific field of literary scholarship in
an effort to show how recent criticism is in conversation and describe the direction that the field
is headed. They are typically published in the book review section of scholarly journals.
Having experience writing both an annotated bibliography and a review essay is important
because it will not only help you to practice some of the skills you will need to have and deploy
independently in other literature courses, like Senior Seminar, but in graduate school should you
choose to go that route. These skills transfer to other research applications, too.

actually always add up to their viewpoint on faith and conformity. What does it mean to

The research paper will increase the student’s critical perspectives, awareness, and knowledge in a course subject area. Each paper will focus on a specific and narrowly defined topic. The charges against her were then dropped because she explained that both the shoplifting and the amnesia resulted from her forgetting to eat after taking her insulin. Of note, her blood-sugar level on testing in the emergency room was elevated. The patient calmed down appearing asymptomatic after the evaluation and was transferred to jail pending a preliminary hearing. When she learned that her release was planned for the next day and that the charges against her would not be dropped, she became extremely agitated, angry, and abusive to the officers. Shortly thereafter, she complained of a headache and said she had no recollection of her abusive behavior. Later that evening she accosted an officer angrily. When the officer responded and addressed the patient by name, "Naomi," the patient said that her name was "Oprah" and that she would not allow herself to be called "Naomi," whom she described as a "wimp and a loser." "Oprah’s" voice and movement were somewhat different from those of "Naomi." She claimed that she had done the shoplifting and stepped back so that "Naomi" could be caught and humiliated, and that if she had wanted to, she could have evaded detection easily. She was returned to the ER and subsequently admitted to the inpatient psychiatric unit for observation. Marriage, couple, and family counselors have varying caseloads. What they all have in common is that their group of clients—whether large or small—represents the variety of human experience. Even those counselors with a specific clinical focus see variety in the ways in which specific issues manifest in different relationships. Part of the goal of your counseling program is to expose you to varying scenarios so that when you are faced with differing client situations, you will have the evidence-based research knowledge, flexibility, analytical skills, and theory-integration practice to know the best course of action to take with a particular couple or family.
To prepare for this Application Assignment, select and view one movie from the list provided in this week’s Learning Resources. Begin to conceptualize the couple's or family’s problem through your theoretical orientation and identify interventions that you might use. Finally, begin to locate articles in the Walden Library that could be used to justify the interventions you selected.
