INTRODUCTIO
N
FEVER OR PYREXIA
IS DEFINED AS A
RISE IN BODY
TEMPERATURE
ABOVE 99.6
DEGREE F
PRESENTATION TITLE 2
STAGES OR PHASES OF FEVER
1. ONSET OR INVASION-ONSET OR INVASION OF
FEVER IS TH PERIOD WHEN THE BODY
TEMPERATUE IS RISING AND IT MAY BE A SUDDEN
OR GRADUAL PROCESS.
2. FASTIGIUM OR STADIUM-FASTIGIUM OF FEVER IS
THE PERIOD WHEN THE BODY TEMPERATURE
REACHED ITS MAXIMUM AND REMAINS FAIRLY
CONSTANT A HIGH LEVEL.
PRESENTATION TITLE 3
3. DEFERVENCES OR STADIUM-DECLINE OF FEVER IS
THE PERIOD WHEN ELEVATE TEMPERATURE IS
RETURNING TO THE NORMAL. THE FEVER MAY
SUBSIDE SUDDENLY OR GRADUALLY
4. CRISIS-CRISIS IS SUDDEN RETURN TO NORMAL
TEMPERATURE FROM A VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE
WITHIN FEW HOURS OR DAYS.
A. TRUE CRISIS- THE TEMPERATURE FALLS SUDDENLY
WITHIN FEW HOURS AND TOUCHES NORMAL,
ACCOMPANIED BY A MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN A
CLIENT CONDITION.
B. FALSE CRISIS- A SUDDEN FALL IN TEMPERATURE
NOT ACCOMPANIED BY AN IMPROVEMENT IN
GENERAL CONDITION IS CALLED FALSE CRISIS.
PRESENTATION TITLE 4
CAUSES OF
FEVER
THE CAUSES OF FEVER ARE-
1. INFECTIONS
2. DISEASES SUCH
AS LEUKAEMIA
AND OTHER
DISEASES
3. HEAR STROKE
4. DEHYDRATION
5. OTHERS PRESENTATION TITLE 5
TYPES OF FEVER
1. CONSTANT FEVER OR CONTINIOUS FEVER- IT IS
ONE IN WHICH THE TEMPERATURE VARIES NOT
MORE THAN 2 DEGREE F BETWEEN MORNING AND
EVENING AND IT DOES NOT REACH NORMAL FOR A
PERIOD OF DAYS OR WEEKS.
2. REMITTENT FEVER- REMITTENT FEVER IS A FEVER
CHARACTERIZED BY VARIATIONS OF MORE THAN 2
DEGREE F BETWEEN MORNING AND EVENING BUT
DOES NOT REACH NORMAL.
PRESENTATION TITLE 6
3. INTERMITTENT- THE TEMPERATURE RISES FROM
NORMAL TO SUBNORMAL INTERVALS. USUALLY THE
TEMPERATURE IS HIGHER IN THE EVENING THAN IN
THE MORNING.
4. RELAPSING FEVER- RELAPSING FEVER IS ONE IN
WHICH THERE ARE BRIEF FEBRILE PERIODS
FOLLOWED BY ONE OR MORE DAYS OF NORMAL
TEMPERATURE.
5. RIGOR- RIGOR IS A SUDDEN ATTACK OF SHIVERING
IN WHICH THE BODY TEMPERATURE RISES RAPIDLY
TO A STAGE OF HYPERPYREXIA AS SEEN IN MALARIA
6. LOW PYREXIA- THE BODY TEMPERATURE DOES NOT
RISE ABOVE 99 DEGREE F TO 100 DEGREE F.
7. MODERATE PYREXIA- THE BODY TEMPERATURE
REMAINS BETWEEN 100 DEGREE F TO 103 DEREE F.
PRESENTATION TITLE 7
8. HIGH PYREXIA- THE TEMPERATURE REMAINS
BETWEEN 103 DEGREE F TO 105 DEGREE F.
9. HYPERPYREXIA- THE TEMPERATURE GOES ABOVE
105 DEGREE F.
PRESENTATION TITLE 8
MANAGEMENT
OF FEVER
1. NON- PHAMACOLOGICAL -
 ENVIROMENTAL MEASURES
 HYDRATION (FLUIDS)
 HYDROTHERAPY
(SPONGING)
2. PHARMACOLOGICAL-
 DRUGS- PARACETAMOL,
IBUPROFEN, MEFENEMIC
ACID
PRESENTATION TITLE 9
NURSING MANAGEMENT
ASSESMENT-
 OBTAIN FREQUENT CORE TEMPERATURE DURING
FEBRILE EPISODE
 ASSESS FOR CONTRIBUTING FACTORS.
 OBTAIN ALL VITAL SIGNS
 ASSESS PATIENT COMFORT AND WELL BEING
PRESENTATION TITLE 10
NURSING DIAGNOSIS-
 PYREXIA RELATED TO INFECTION AS EVIDENCED BY
MEASURING BODY TEMPERATURE OF THE PATIENT.
 FATIGUE RELATED TO INCREASED METABOLIC
DEMANDS AN DISRUPTED SLEEP PATTERNS FROM
FEVER.
PRESENTATION TITLE 11
NURSING INTERVENTIONS-
MONITOR TEMPERATURE
MAINTAIN COMFORTABLE AND COOL ENVIROMENT
INSTRUCT PATIENT TO INCREASE FREE ORAL FLUIDS
OF CHOICE.
INSTRUCT PATIENT TO INCREASE FREQUENCY OF
REST.
PROVIDE COLD SPONGING WITH NORMAL TAP WATER.
ADMINISTER ANTIPYRETIC AS PRESCRIBED BY
DOCTOR.
REASESS THE CONDITION OF THE PATIENT.
PRESENTATION TITLE 12
