This thesis presents a design proposal for a recreational landscape by the Western quarry in Slite, an 89 hectare wide and 45 meters deep quarry on the northern part of Gotland where limestone is being extracted for the production of cement.
By participating in the Quarry Life Award 2014, a competition to raise the knowledge about biodiversity in quarries, the project was given a thematic focus on biodiversity and how knowledge about it can be spread.
In this thesis handling a quarry and how it can be restored is breaking new ground. The new knowledge has being weaved together with a natural environment just as complex and through the design the public gets access to this new natural and cultural landscape with new aesthetic values and experiences.

The Czech Republic land reclamation policies require that after use mining sites must be reclaimed to their original use, i.e. to forests or agricultural use. This project compares the effect of technical reclamation and spontaneous succession on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in abandoned areas of the sand pit. It also studies the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands, started in 2009.
The project won the 1st Prize in the International Quarry Life Award in 2012 and the 1st Prize in National Quarry Life Award in 2012 in the Czech Republic.

Slide 1: Hook > “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”
- Confucius
I really thought this would be a good hook as it really says a lot about me, I’m not concerned at how fast I can do things currently but I know that I will get better at that sort of thing over time, but right now keeping my skills up to date even in months that I do not have class is esstial to me.
Hook continued This is some of my tradiontial Art
In this slide I am going to talk about how I am an artist, include a picture of my artwork. I wanted to talk about how art makes me feel, and that I couldn’t go a a day without depicting some sort artwork throughout my day.

Now as I am getting into this new artform I’m starting to see everything as topology and how I can model it. This has been a growing thing for me I haven’t had that much time with programs such as Maya, Zbrush, Blender, etc. But I feel like I have come a long way sense or first modeling class.

the reason I am here > Coming here to fullsail, I have wanted to create truly quality games versus the the type that have been coming out, I am not implying they are garbage but rather misleading. I want to be innovative and I want to get a game to its furthest potential that I can through the levels of perseverance, and dedication to my team.
And that is my Mantra
“I am an adaptive, persistent, and artistic component to the gaming industry.”.

- Ian Ferguson
Getting into my first jobs it was about video games, It was always about video games, When I got my first jobs it was to pay for my own video games and the joy of obtaining it through means of hard work. And this is where I developed my skill sets that I would eventually use towards creating video games for myself.

Skill Set > I have been a student my entire life, and within these jobs I have taking away something and different but one thing that I always learned from every job was that you need dedication to the job, you may not like it but finding reasoning behind the job, is what really makes me really try my hardest to get it done. It is actually probably my biggest fear is not get something done, like everyone has these unearthly fears but mine is not getting a job done and how people will think of me afterwards.
Photo Cred : https://www.flickr.com/photos/24147261@N02/3791651773/
I also took away from most jobs that you need to be able to be patient but on the opposite side of the spectrum you need to be ready for heavy deadlines and tough hours, so appreciate your time to work hard on something cause you time frame might be small or large, So I would say I work well under pressure from the skills provided.
PhotoCred : https://www.flickr.com/photos/68397968@N07/14118666380/
I am also flexible, and resilient, from being able to speak in front of peers as well as students as I am a confident and well prepared usually for all presentation, and even one’s that are sprung onto me I am flexible and resilient to the task, this is where I came from experience.

. I’ve given non technology based presentation, as most of my situations would not involve slide shows but rather kinesthetic and auditory learning styles of doing the exercise while I explain it.

Past experience > Going throught my past work experience, again as I stated before hand I have worked my entire life. When I was at the age of 12 this was the first time I really developed a goal for myself, and that was that I wanted to pay for my own video games. I grew tired of being at the whim of my parent’s money so I asked my dad if I could get a job, and he told me I couldn’t. So I proved him wrong, and I told him in the state of New Hampshire youth at the age of 12 have the ability to acquire a job in Agriculture. So I found a job picking vegetables.

This was really like the first time I had actually taken real steps towards a long term goal, It was like a flip of a switch and I was out of my lost childhood into the lesson’s of adolescents, where I wanted to develop a work ethic like my boss, he taught my to be punctual and to do as I say, or fallow my words. And he would always hold me too that and this is where my work Mantra came from and that if I wanted to keep my job for my video games. I may not have known what those words meant at the time but I worked like this all the time.

“I’m an ever changing force of dedication and perseverance”.
- Ian Ferguson
Taking a job working at a 5 star restaurant I was in the maintenance crew so I was mostly cleaning and preparing food to be cooked, and this job taught me that I need to be able to work under pressure, hot ovens, loud people, angry hungry people, etc of course. But I was constantly being yelled at to do something, and I had to teach myself personal skill to deal with these kinds of people, and I learned lot manners with a customer and how respect in the workplace works.
Photocred: https://www.flickr.com/photos/50841206@N02/8587483603/
In my last career, I started at the bottom, and this taught me hierarchy and how work ethic can yield rewards. Hard workers are rewarded, people think they go unnoticed but I am aware of how a good work ethic and a persistent work ethic can get you places. I started as a snowboard instructor at a local mountain, and slowly but yearly progressed to doing clinics with a PM.Snowtec which is a branch of DC’s coaching clinics. I learned that if I have to work hard to get places, then I can and will.
Photo Cred: https://www.flickr.com/photos/44345361@N06/4378400829/
Now taking all of these life skills, I applied them in my schooling. Going to school is almost no different then having a job, and I knew that if I wanted to get some place in the artistic world I need to surround myself with the best people and use my solid work ethic towards any challenge. And a big one was my AP art class in senior year of high school this class taught my time management, I constantly had due dates very close together so if I didn’t plan my time to my artwork it would overwhelm me.

And a big one was my AP art class in senior year of high school this class taught my time management, I constantly had due dates very close together so if I didn’t plan my time to my artwork it would overwhelm me.
And continuing my artwork, with this work ethic I found myself being successful but this didn’t stop me, it made me more humble towards the individuals who were teaching me and I constantly wanted to learn more so I approached college with the thirst of a new art form. And to work out problems within the program, and troubleshooting all the time.
that is modeling
*Picture of a model*
So I tried to do more with my models, and see how far I could push them.
*picture of my model*
I came to fullsail because I knew I could do it and offer the art industry something and someone to be involved and dedicated towards the creation of an innovative video game experience. I also came to learn how to make said models, I again am constantly learning and this while be a skill I will relate to forever.
I wanted to put all my contact information right after I show all my work, because If someone sees something they like within the artwork section they are going to want to call me or contact me as soon as possible so I want to make my information at the appropriate time.
This is just a little bit about myself I grew up in a small town of Keene New Hampshire, I was into arts since I hit high school and I also really enjoyed Computer science during ym time there and this really influenced my roots to want to come to full sail and try out the game art program.
I wouldn’t say that I only feel successful when I project is finished, this is a prime time to feel successful, however a moment that really says that I am successful is that my co-workers speak highly of me, my work shows that I have put in the time and the effort and the mechanic expertise to design what my project is, and that my goal for the future is to always be a student and to be in an environment of always learning and changing and this again reinforces my Mantra that I will be a changing force of creation.
