What's the role of the body on feminism? Using "La piel que habito" (The skin I live in) as an example, we analyse Simone De Beauvoir´s ideas, and the interpretations of Judith Butler and Moiran Gatens on them. The movie is a perfect example of how De Beauvoir theory on biology and the body cannot be understood from an essentialist perspective (since existence precedes essence), nor from a social constructivist perspective (at least if that implies a negation of the importance of the body as a crucial factor to experience reality). In this context, Almodóvar's film is a really deep and complex sum of symbolism and meaning to articulate a powerful discourse that raises questions about the relationship between body and mind, gender and sex, that also includes contemporary issues such as biology and choice in an epoch of medical advancements.
