Hard Conversations: Ananias and Jesus (Dangerous Encounters)Stephen Palm
This fourth sermon in the Hard Conversations series entitled Dangerous Encounters will explore the hard conversation in which Jesus sends Ananias to heal the blinded Saul of Tarsus. This conversation is a call to overcome fear and hatred and follow Jesus down a dangerous path. We will explore our tendency to create theologies that affirm personal safety and comfort and evaluate these against Jesus' call to go as sheep among wolves.

A scriptural guide for Church Leaders on dealing with issues. Covers responsibilities of church leaders, witnesses, the process for judging and dealing with fear and unpopularity. Most importantly it highlights the consequences of remaining silent and speaking out. Also has discussion questions to ponder upon.
The final characteristic of a sacrificial follower of Christ who makes sacrificial followers of Christ who go is a heart for the lost, which is more than just a willingness to evangelize.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

2. WHAT IS OBEDIENCE?
GENERALLY:
– compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's
authority.
BIBLICALLY:
– To hear God’s Word and act accordingly;
– Hearing or hearkening to a higher authority;
– To submit and surrender to the Word: to trust.
3. EXAMPLES OF OBEDIENCE
– Abraham: ‘father of faith’
– Jesus: ‘obeyed unto the point of death’ Philippians 2:8
– Noah: obeyed in creating Noah’s Ark
– Daniel: refused to bow to the King
4. DISOBEDIENCE
– 1 “Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai,
saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against
it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose
to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down
to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare,
and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the
presence of the Lord.”
– JONAH 1:1-3
5. WHY DO WE DISOBEY?
FEAR
– Insecurity and fear can take hold of us and make us feel less than
what God has called us to be.
PRIDE
– We may think that we are better than what God is calling us to do
or to say.
– Indirect pride
6. DISOBEDIENCE
– Partial obedience is disobedience!
– Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven
for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for
that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will
follow my instructions. Exodus 16:4
– Delayed obedience is disobedience!
“Without delay I hurry to obey your commands” Psalm 119:60
7. WHY DO WE DISOBEY?
1 Samuel 15
3 Now go and attack[a] Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not
spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep,
camel and donkey.’ ”
9 “But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the
fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy
them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.”
22 So Samuel said:
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the
voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat
of rams.
8. THE STORY OF SAUL
Acts 8:3- As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every
house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to
prison.
Acts 9:6- So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You
want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the
city, and you will be told what you must do.”
9. HOW CAN WE BE OBEDIENT?
1. Have a relationship with God
Jeremiah 29:13; James 4:8
2. Accept that we are flawed
Isaiah 64:6; Romans 3:23
3. Be transparent and open
Luke 16:15
4. Find accountability
Ecclesiastes 4:10; Provers 27:17
ABOVE ALL- GOD’s WORD.
10. Feel The Fear: Do It Anyway!
– Genesis 12:1-3
“Now the LORD had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and
make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all
the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And
Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.”
Editor's Notes
Also Adam- when he disobeyed he tried to hide from the presence of God
Example of fear and pride- me last year vs this year
An opportunity of a lifetime only lasts for the lifetime of the opportunity.
God wants nothing but our obedience.
Saul attempted to mask his disobedience with self-righteousness. He decided that he would not obey but he would sacrifice to God.
S/Paul is responsible for a majority of NT books
He did not allow his past to stop him from being used by God
Imagine if Saul did not obey but kept persecuting God’s people
Realise that souls are TIED to your obedience, literally
In Acts 9, Saul encounters God
From then on he was changed
You cannot obey who you do not know, how will you hear their commands?
You cannot disobey what you have not heard- first definition is hearing and hearkening to God’s Word
2. Humility- we will mess up but His grace is sufficient; do not hide because you cant and it s not worth it
3. God already knows- we need to allow Him to transform our negative feelings and thoughts
4. Find somebody that will keep you accountable and that you can share your feelings with.
OBEDIENCE IS IMPORTANT- SO MANY SOULS ARE ATTACHED TO YOU. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO BE DISOBEDIENT.
If are waiting for fear to subside, we will keep on waiting.
Obedience and faith are tied- through faith we obey.
There are so many things that God has asked us to do but we are not doing it.
We need to pray for forgiveness of our disobedience
We need to ask God for the boldness to do what he has asked
