This document is a survey completed by Christina Wierenga for a federal election in Canada. It includes information about the date of the election, who she believes will be the next Prime Minister and why, the riding she lives in, and the candidates running in her riding. It also asks where she falls on the political spectrum and which party platform she most agrees with based on reading about key issues. She indicates she falls on the left side due to her views on healthcare and education. Based on reading party platforms, she says she most agrees with the Liberal views on immigration and crime, and the Conservative view on health, and thinks she would vote Conservative despite disagreeing with some of their more traditional values.
Party Identification (AP US Government and Politics)Tom Richey
I created this PowerPoint to go along with my AP US Government and Politics lecture on Party Identification. The YouTube video lecture is available online. Here is the summary of the goals of this lecture:
In the United States, we have a two party system, but many American voters identify themselves as Independent. Are Independents truly independent? In what ways do they participate in the two party system? Furthermore, what factors influence party identification? What prompts someone to identify as a Democrat, a Republican, or an Independent?
Mr. Richey, an AP Government teacher, will answer these questions in this lecture on Party Identification. Please subscribe for more lectures in AP Government, AP US History, and AP European History!

1. Federal Election 2011
Name: Christina Wierenga
What is the date of the federal election? May 2nd
Who do you believe will be our next PM? Stephen Harper
Why?
I think that he will be our next premier because of all the publicity this party has done (all the signs that are everywhere). I also think that this party has a lot of values that agree with many people.
What riding do you live in? Wetaskiwin
List the people who are running for Member of Parliament in your riding, along with their party affiliation and the party leader.
CandidatePartyParty LeaderBlaine CalkinsConservativeStephen Harper Robert JohnstonGreen Party Elizabeth MayChris AndersonLiberal Party Michael IgnatieffTim RobsonNDPJack Layton
Based on what you have learned the last 2 classes, where do you think you fall on the political and economic spectrum (right or left?) Why do you think this – what ideas make the most sense?
I think I fall on the left side of the spectrum, because it has been made apparent that I disagree with the conservative view of change and government involvement in people’s lives. I can’t imagine life without our healthcare system, or our public education. I would rather be “free from” rather than “free to”.
4451350-657225
Complete the Vote Compass survey on the CBC website to find out its recommendation for which party platform you most support (according to their question set)
-47625173355
Go to the Globe and Mail’s website and read through Party Platforms highlights on 10 key issues for Canadians.
If you were able to vote in this election which party would you vote for and why? You must, make reference to 3 key issues written about in the Globe and the component of your party’s platform you most agree with. Explanations of why these ideas appeal and make sense to you must be included.
Immigration- The liberal ideas seem to agree with me. The immigrants should be given more help, so that they “merge” into Canadian society smoothly.
Crime- the conservative view on this one is pretty much what I think should happen as well. Criminals should be more harshly punished, and have better procedures to deal and handle certain problems.
Health- the liberals plan to make food healthier to eat, and also plan on researching certain diseases. This would make the healthcare a lot better.
If I could vote I think that I would vote for the Conservatives, even though they seem very old fashioned sometimes, some of their values are the same as mine. These values are something that I will not part with, and the other parties are not in tune with these values.(disagree with: same sex marriage, abortion, etc)
