The Rolling Stones
Keith Richards,
69, Lead

“basically it’s a
whorehouse”).
Mick Jagger, 69,
Lead Vocalist
Apart from sleeping with
Sarkozy’s wife Carla Bruni
and getting dumped by Jolie,
he has also bedded men.
Charlie Watts,
71,
Drummer
The drummer of the world’s

and instead considers
himself more of a jazz
musician.
Ronnie Wood, 65,
Guitarist
Now married to
34-year-old Sally
Humphreys, he once dated
Russian artist Ekaterina
Ivanova and was accused
of dragging her along the

their lifestyle is quite
different from what

the four-member band is only
photographed by the paparazzi for
their events and performances. With
a squeaky clean image – Mick
Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie
Watts and Ronnie Wood are now
the old men of Rock ‘n’ Roll
hedonism. Compare their looks to
young lads like Bieber, and they look
like the men from the Axe ad.
Luscious hair, great bodies and a
personality that even at 69 will
forcefully draw your attention. What
is crazier is their enthusiasm to
perform at gigs even after 50 years.
Their energy level and Jagger’s
voice can even give Lady Gaga an
adrenaline rush.
they were originally called
became a new sensation in the
Blues scene. “Our name was
based on a song Mannish Boy by
Muddy Waters who we absolutely
loved. Later on, our manager
added a ‘g’ making it The Rolling
Stones,” Richards shares.
As The Stones gained
popularity, they started
experimenting. However, all this
wasn’t without difficulty. Their
contemporaries, The Beatles and
The Kinks were tough
competitors and additionally,
changes in the line-up, the death
of Jones and a concertgoer shot
dead – all took place one after the
other. But none of this stopped
them. “We started off really small,
doing what we wanted to do,
which was to play music and to
bring America the music that was
right at their doorstep but they
weren’t listening to it. We love RnB
and it has always been about the
music for us,” adds Richards.
Would You Let Your
Daughter Marry a
Rolling Stone?
Unlike the meek Beatles, Stones
were always hard-hitting and
abusive. Picking up from their
notorious demeanour, manager
Andrew Oldham promoted them
around the globe. Whenever they
toured, the newspapers read,
“Would You Let Your Daughter
Marry a Rolling Stone”. While
young girls and boys hooted for
them, adults detested them. The
reason: the controversies that
(somehow) surrounded the band
perpetually.
From drug possession to
umpteen affairs that created
nationwide debate, there were too
many incidents to remember. One
article that led to widespread
hullabaloo was about the band
urinating in public. “In those days
people were very easily shocked.
Now you’ve got a few scandals in
your daily papers, but back then it
wasn’t like that. So people and the
press played up what we did, even
though what we were doing wasn’t
really that shocking,” Charlie Watts
says with a smile. “Also, back then
the industry was different too. If you
were in show business you had to
behave in a certain manner and
conduct yourself properly. We didn’t
create controversies, at least, we
didn’t intend to,” he smirks.

• They almost became a Rock ‘n’

“death by misadventure.” He had
major drug problems and left the
band a few weeks earlier.
• Jagger was knighted in 2002.
Richards thought it was very
hypocritical of him to accept the
honour, since The Stones have
always been critical of the British

TRIVIA
Rollin’ Stones
Everyone knows The Stones
untamed history, however their
oldest member Jagger throws
some light on things, “It was a
very different time back then.
There was no popular culture and
music wasn’t an intellectual
subject... it just was. We became a
part of a great phenomenon and
suddenly we were in magazines
and newspaper.”
Many know that Jagger and
Richards were childhood friends
and bumped into each other after
a long time. Their passion for
music brought them together
and that was the beginning of an
era. With Jagger as the frontman,
Keith (Richards) and Brian Jones
were on the guitar backed by
bassist Bill Wyman and drummer
Charlie Watts. Rollin’ Stones as

Before The
Rolling Stones
became famous as
the world’s
greatest rock ‘n’
roll band, they had
already claimed
the title of the
‘Bad Boys’ of music.
Back in the 60s, the
five-member band
were far away from
being clean-cut
guys and instead
headlined every
tabloid in the US
and the UK with
their drug abuse
and arrest
warrants. But did
that stop them
from creating
history? Not at all!
Their passion for
music placed them
at the top position,
at times surpassing
their friends-cum-
rivals The Beatles
and made them into
legends… Words Shruti Gattani
Your Man, Little Red Rooster and (I
Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Jagger’s
rustic-style dancing became so
famous that it inspired the recent hit
Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 and
Christina Aguilera. “It’s very
flattering to have a song about the
dance I did,” Jagger states. Quiz him
if the moves were spontaneous or
choreographed and he replies,
“When I was younger, mum tried to
teach me the waltz, but it wasn’t
really my thing. I never had a
choreographer. It just came to me.
At that time I was very taken by
Little Richards and his movements.”
Success came at a young age, so
surely there were things that they did
absolutely wrong – “I don’t know if
we did anything wrong, really,”
Jagger cuts in. “When we started out
we just wanted to get the music out
there. We knew, of course that if we
were successful then the fame and
everything would come with it, but it
has always been about giving back
what we got and getting great music
out,” he explains.
While it was a snakes-and-ladders
journey for the band, they feel it’s a
whole different age now. “Rock was a
completely new form when we
started and rock ‘n’ roll has evolved
since then. Also, there’s so much
more exposure to new music now
and so much possibility,” Wood
voices. Just like the growth in rock,
The Stones’ camp feels their fans
have grown up along with them
apart from the new fans who have
joined in.
Now they only meet at the
recording studio once in a while.
Though for celebrating the band’s
50th Anniversary, The Stones came
together to release a compilation
album Grrr! with their best singles.
“This album tells our story, our
journey and everything we’ve been
through in the last 50 years. Of
course, we’ve had different members
over the years, but it has always been
and will always survive as The Rolling
Stones,” Jagger proudly states. Do
you think of anyone as competition
today? “We weren’t really
competitive. Back then we were on
contention with The Beatles. I think
people thought of them as the good
guys and we were the bad guys. I like
to believe, we are still,” Jaggers ends
with a laugh.

• Keith Richards failed his

eventually passed on Richards’

• The album cover of Sticky

John Pasch or Craig Braun.
• Mick Jagger doesn’t shy away
from diaper duty. In fact, he’s
quite good at it. “I’ve always
changed nappies, for other
people’s children as well as my
own,” he said. “I change[d]
Ronnie Wood’s children’s
nappies. You do these things
when it’s necessary – although
I’m not about to become a
full-time house-husband like
John Lennon did at one stage
[but] I’m relatively experienced
and I quite enjoy it.”
• Charlie Watts was awakened in
the middle of the night by a call
from a drunk and coked-up Mick
Jagger who was screaming,
“Where’s my f*ckin’ drummer?”
Watts calmly got up, dressed in
his usual impeccable dark suit,
shined shoes and tie, pocket
scarf, went over to Mick’s hotel
room and punched Jagger in the
face, without so much as raising
his voice, he said, “Don’t you
ever call me your drummer
again. You’re my singer.”
