This document debunks the myth that John Lennon was working class. While Lennon sang about being a "working class hero" in one of his songs, he did not come from a working class background. His father Alfred came from a poor working class family but had risen to become a merchant seaman, placing him in the lower middle class. Lennon grew up in relative comfort with his Aunt Mimi, who was solidly middle class. Though he identified with working class values, Lennon's upbringing was firmly middle class.
