Jane Goodall was hesitant to volunteer for the Humane Society's 5k Fun Run because she thought they only helped sick animals. However, after learning more about the organization's mission to also raise money for the community, she changed her mind. A blog post by the Humane Society explained how volunteers could get involved in the race and what the funds would be used for. Pleased to find their values aligned with her own, Goodall decided to volunteer at the 5k Fun Run to support the Humane Society's work helping both animals and citizens in Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – When it comes to the Humane Society, people often think about
adopting dogs and protecting animals, but they changed that opinion of one volunteer.
Jane Goodall, a resident of Birmingham, was one of the last volunteers to sign up for the
race. “When people talked about the Humane Society, I immediately thought of helping sick
dogs. I am an avid animal lover, but I don’t want to help an organization who only helps
sick animals. ”
Jane Goodall volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House, Jimmie Hale Mission and with the
Color Run in her spare time. She believes in giving back to the community one step at time.
Goodall has her own selective process when choosing an organization to volunteer for. She
only volunteers for organizations whose mission includes raising money for the
community. “I only volunteer for organizations that are non-profit, serve the humanity and
compassionate about helping the citizens around Birmingham.
Jane Goodall heard about the 5k Fun Run through her friend Amy Mack. “I volunteer for the
Humane Society all the time,” Mack said. “I want her to volunteer with me, because I know
it will be a different experience than what she is used to.”
The Humane Society will host a 5k Fun Run race on Saturday, August 17 at the Oak
Mountain State Park at 8 a.m. The community can get involved through running,
volunteering or donating. “Everyone will be able to play a pivotal role in making this race a
success,” said Victor Gamble, community outreach director. “We have ways for everyone to
get involved and make an impact with the Humane Society.”
Two days before the race and Jane Goodall was still unsure of becoming a volunteer. She
continued her research by reading different websites promoting the 5k Fun Run. She found
one blog post that would change her life forever. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society
released a blog post 30 minutes prior to her research. The blog contained more information
about volunteering, the purpose of the Fun Run and how to get involved.
Goodall was pleased to find out that the Humane Society’s values matched her own. “My
opinion of the Humane Society is significantly different now that I have more knowledge of
what they do,” Goodall said. “I am pleased to announce that I will be a volunteer at the 5k

2. Fun Run.” She encourages everyone to become a volunteer for the Humane Society and all
of its events.
