This document provides information about an upcoming documentary film titled "Land and Discontent" that will examine the anarchist revolution that occurred in Spain in the 1930s. 3. In 1936, a group of anarchists defeated Franco’s troops in Barcelona. During
the following 9½ months, half of Spain was under anarchist control.
It was the first time that an anarchist
revolution succeeded.
Our story takes place during this time.

Ernest Hemingway visited and was fascinated by the freedom fighters.
George Orwell wrote a book about the revolution without communists called
“Homage to Catalonia.”
All over Europe, intellectuals supported the republican side and many of them
saw the Spanish Civil War as a prelude to a bigger confrontation between
dictatorships and democracies.

democracy.
The anarchists wanted to create a
revolution.
And one decision they took was to
abolish private property.

6. In La Fatarella, a town in southern Catalonia, the peasants were against
collective property.
They wanted to work the land the same way they had done for generations.
The peasants expelled the anarchists
leaders from town.

7. On the 25th of January, anarchists troops
entered the town and executed 31
peasants.
At the time, the town had a population of 700 people.

8. The anarchist press called the peasants
fascists.
Multiple episodes ensued where the anarchists tried to create a revolution
through violence.
In May 1937 communist party took control of the republican side.
In July 1939 the republicans lost the war. As a result, Spain fell under a right-
wing dictatorship for the next 40 years.
