Farmers' suicides have increased dramatically in Maharashtra, particularly in the Vidarbha region. The suicide rate for farmers in the state increased from 15 per 100,000 in 1995 to 57 per 100,000 in 2004. Farmers face significant economic hardships due to factors like declining cotton prices, low crop yields, lack of access to credit, and unreliable rainfall. Bold public policy initiatives and greater civil society engagement are needed to address the agricultural crisis and reduce farmers' vulnerabilities.
