Most cases of diabetes (about 90%) are type-2 diabetes. The number of diabetes patients has increased significantly worldwide from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014, with the prevalence among adults over 18 rising from 4.7% to 8.5%, and diabetes caused 1.6 million deaths in 2016.
