Family Values
Gender Roles: Male, America vs. China
 In the western society, the male is generally viewed as the
main source of income for the household. It is the male’s
job to work and feed his family while protecting them.
 In the traditional Chinese family, the man is responsible for
maintaining, providing for and protecting his family. At the
same time, he is given all the decision-making power when
it comes to his wife, family and other family members. He is
also responsible for taking care of and paying for his
children, including their education, until they are married.
Gender Roles: Female, America vs. China
 In traditional western families, the female’s job is to be
the mom, and to take care of the children while being a
“stay-at-home mom”. Yet this is no longer the case, and
for many families the mom is the one with the primary
source of income, and the male stays at home.
 Traditional Chinese mothers usually stay in the home to
take care of the home, the children, and the rest of the
family. Many modern Chinese women have careers, but
still rely on their husbands or fathers for financial
support at some point in their lives.
Marriage: America vs. China
 Marriage in the American society is valued heavily, with the
exact definition of it being argued currently. Couples are able
to choose their partner, yet some still ask for the approval of
the others parents. Also, in western society divorce is not as
looked down upon, and happens more frequently.
 Marriage, family and children are very important in the
Chinese culture. Traditional marriages were arranged by the
parents of the bride and groom. Many couples never even met
one another until their wedding day. Modern Chinese couples
choose their own partners, but many still ask for their elders'
approval.
Elders: America vs. China
 In modern American families, it is rare now-a-days to find a
family living with their extended family. Elders are still
respected, but not put on as high a pedestal as many other
cultures do.
 In both traditional and modern families, elders are
respected, taken care of and looked up to by the rest of the
family. In traditional families, including those living in a rural
environment, many households include five generations living
together. Even in modern households, many grandparents live
with their children and their kids.
Children: America vs. China
 In American families, parents treat their children not
nearly as strict as the Chinese parents do. The American
family has a more lenient approach to teaching, rarely
using physical disciplinary actions and generally trying to
talk them through things.
 In traditional families, all children are expected to obey
their parents without discussion. In modern China, both
girls and boys are usually treated equally. While many
Chinese parents are strict, using physical discipline
techniques and force able threats, they are more lenient
and flexible than in the past.
