Victoria interviewed her mother and father about their family histories. Her mother's side had limited information beyond her grandparents, who were born in the United States, and moved frequently within California. Her father's grandparents emigrated from Mexico to the United States to escape lack of opportunities and find better jobs, education, and neighborhoods. They settled in El Monte, California, where her grandfather worked as a mechanic and grandmother as a homemaker, and there was a Spanish-speaking community so language was not initially a barrier. Both sides of the family have now assimilated American culture and traditions.

2. MY MOM’S SIDE
For my mom’s side I interviewed my mom. Although her resources on
our family tree beyond her parents lives were very limited there are
still some connections to our geography terms.

3. MY MOM’S SIDE
My mom is not sure where her grandparents emigrated from.
However, she does know that her parents were born here in the United
States. When interviewing my mom she mentioned that her parents
moved a lot within California, also known as internal migration.

4. MY MOM’S SIDE
When my grandpa remarried, he moved from La Puente, CA and
bought a house for himself and his family out in Hisperia, CA because
houses were inexpensive, pull factor.

5. MY MOM’S SIDE
Although my mom is unsure of where her grandparents come from,
for the most part, my family has adopted the assimilation of Americas
culture. We celebrate most holidays and have the typical gatherings
with the particular foods that go along with them.

6. MY DAD’S SIDE
For my dad’s side of my family I interviewed my dad. We both learned
about our family history as we had to ask others for information. It
was very interesting to see how my dad’s side relates to our
geography terms in several ways.

My grandparents are part of the 4th wave of immigration when they
entered the United States after crossing the borders of Mexico, also
known as point of entry.

8. MY DAD’S SIDE
My grandparents Victoria and David Oliva emigrated from Mexico.
After coming to the states they resided in El Monte, CA. Some push
factors of moving away from Mexico were lack of opportunities and
not a promising future for their growing family. Some pull factors of
coming to the states were better opportunities such as, better jobs,
education, and a neighborhood to raise a family in.

9. MY DAD’S SIDE
When settling in California my grandpa David Oliva worked under the
secondary economic sector as a mechanic. As for my grandma,
Victoria Oliva, she worked as a homemaker.

10. MY DAD’S SIDE
Living in El Monte, CA there was not much of a language barrier for
my grandparents because like Los Angeles, El Monte has an ethnic
neighborhood of Spanish speakers. My dad, aunt, and uncle, however,
did learn English through education.

11. MY DAD’S SIDE
My dad’s side of the family is very small and it is hard to say whether
our traditions have stuck around after time has passed. Whenever we
do have family gatherings I’m always stuck at work. For the most part
my dad’s side of the family has adopted the assimilation of America’s
culture.

My Grandpa was from

My Grandma was from
Jalisco, Mexico.
Later on after meeting each
other they moved to
Tijuana, Mexico.
Once they started a family
is when they moved to El
Monte, CA.
