My dad Juan Oliva was born in Tijuana, Mexico. His parents, Victoria and David Oliva, were born in Ejutla, Jalisco and La Estanzuela, Michoacan respectively. They migrated to Tijuana after meeting where they started their family. When my dad was 1 year old, they migrated to El Monte, California for better opportunities and safety. After settling in El Monte, my grandfather worked as a mechanic while my grandmother was a homemaker.

2. JUAN OLIVA
For my family history project I interviewed my dad, Juan Oliva. We
both learned more about our family as we had to get in contact with
other relatives to find the answers to some of my interview questions.
It was very intriguing to see the connections my family had with our
geography terms.

3. My dad was born in Tijuana,
Mexico.
He is the youngest son of David
Rodriguez Oliva and Victoria
Delgado Oliva.
My grandmother was born in
Ejutla, Jalisco.
My grandfather was born in La
Estanzuela, Michoacan.
They migrated to Tijuana,
Mexico after they met and
moved in together to start a
family.

4. They migrated to California from Mexico when my dad was about 1
years old.
My grandparents are part of the 4th wave of immigration when they
entered the United States after crossing the borders of Mexico, also
known as point of entry.

5. My grandparents Victoria and David Oliva emigrated from Mexico.
After coming to the states they resided in El Monte, CA. Some push
factors of moving away from Mexico were lack of opportunities and
not a promising future for their family. Some pull factors of coming
to the states were better opportunities such as, better jobs,
education, and a safer neighborhood to raise a family in.

6. When settling in California my grandpa David Oliva worked under the
secondary economic sector as a mechanic. As for my grandma,
Victoria Oliva, she worked as a homemaker.

7. Living in El Monte, CA there was not much of a language barrier for
my grandparents because like Los Angeles, El Monte has an ethnic
neighborhood of Spanish speakers. My dad, aunt, and uncle,
however, did learn English through education.

8. My dad’s side of the family is very small and it is hard to say whether
our traditions have stuck around after time has passed. Whenever we
do have family gatherings I’m always stuck at work. For the most part
my dad’s side of the family has adopted the assimilation of America’s
culture.

9. My Grandpa was from
Michoacan, Mexico.
My Grandma was from
Jalisco, Mexico.
Later on after meeting each
other they moved to
Tijuana, Mexico.
Once they started a family is
when they moved to El
Monte, CA.
