Eventually they formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
and were housed in a couple of locations in Richland and
Pasco before moving into their present facility on Georgia
avenue in Richland 12 years ago. Today, a staff of 40 physical,
occupational and speech therapists and certified special
education teachers provide early intervention services to 650
children and their families, predominantly children from
infancy to age 3 in Benton and Franklin Counties.
“The community made this building possible,” says Cathryn
Tames, executive director of the Children’s Developmental
Center. Community and family are two things she emphasizes
throughout her explanations of the Center’s services.
Through their years of experience, the staff at the Children’s
Developmental Center have seen that parents of special needs
children can often struggle with feeling isolated from other
families. In addition to visiting homes to coach parents in
becoming their children’s number one teachers, the staff
also seeks ways to bring families together with one another in
classes or support groups. “Many parents say to us, ‘This is the
only place where my child is like everyone else,’” says Tames.
She says that one important activity to combat the feeling
of isolation is the Center’s Play-to-Learn group. During the
group sessions, teachers lead the children in playing together
by incorporating skills they need for development, while the
parents have an opportunity to spend time with each other.
The bond that forms between the families is strong, and
they become a significant point of support for each other,
sometimes forming lifelong friendships. When Hansens and
Tames talk, it is easy to see their care for the children and their
passion for serving them. Each child is unique and has his or
her own program developed by the teachers, therapists and
the clinical director, Dr. Scott Grewe. Just as the staff works to
impact the lives of the children, each child makes an impact
on the hearts of the workers, as well. Tames shares the story
of a little girl whose disability kept her from sitting upright.
The girl so captured the heart of one therapist that she and
her husband worked at home to build a scooter for the girl
to sit in and move around the room in a way she had never
experienced before. Hansens tells of another girl whose family
became such a special part of the Children’s Developmental
Center’s broader family that they continue to make monthly
contributions, even 15 years after their daughter graduated
from the preschool program.
While their focus remains infants and toddlers, in recent
years the Center has expanded to serve children over the age
of 3, as well. The Center can evaluate children up to age 10
for autistic disorders — a condition that previously required
the mission of the Children’s Developmental families to travel to Yakima or Seattle for a diagnosis — before

they hope to expand these programs and others in the
near future. From a corner of her office, she pulls out an
architect’s rendering of future additions to the Children’s
Developmental Center campus. They envision one day
having a facility that provides services for special needs
individuals from birth through young adulthood that
specializes in medical, dental, therapies and education.
Businesses and individuals in the Tri-Cities community
make a great deal of the Center’s work possible. With an
annual budget of over $2 million, they depend on the help
of corporate sponsorships, donations from their annual
events (an annual golf tournament, the annual Wine Fête
Dinner and auction, and the Cuisine de Vin) and the work
of volunteers, including those who serve on committees or
on the Board of Directors. For more information on how

Back in the Center’s hallway after our interview, Hansens
points out a photo collage with young faces. now that I
have heard their stories from the Center’s directors, they
are no longer only faces, no longer statistics of the 650
families served by the Center. They are extraordinary
children, each a young life with potential to grow and
thrive. Fortunately, the Tri-Cities has the Children’s
Developmental Center to help make that growth possible.

designers and builders stick to. Your own individual flair will
shine in a master suite that fits well with your lifestyle and
reflects your own sense of comfort and rejuvenation.
Whether you are remodeling an existing home or designing a
master suite from scratch, the first step of the design process is
to ask yourself a few pointed questions about how these rooms
will best serve your lifestyle. “How people live impacts decisions
in design,” says Katie Carlson of Spencer Carlson in Kennewick.
She says the most important part of her job in helping home
owners design and decorate their living spaces is to find out
as much as she can about their living habits and lead them to
make design decisions accordingly.
Does a couple get up at the same time? If so, they may need
a double shower to save time in the mornings. Do either of
them actually enjoy taking baths? If not, they might consider
skipping the jacuzzi and using that space for something else.
What is the size and shape of each room? Is the suite open

PlAnnIng your sHower
Functionality and comfort are the greatest considerations
in choosing the type of shower you’ll have in your master bath.
Planning the shower is a good time to come back to Carlson’s
questions for her clients: What are your special needs? Do you
need a roll-in shower with no curb? How long do you plan to
live in this house? Will you retire here? How tall are you?
Beyond the features in the shower, the type of glass and
design of the shower door are huge factors in the master bath.
Steve Linhoff of Perfection Glass in Kennewick says he likes to
consult with home owners at the initial stage of designing or
remodeling the bath, in order to help people think through
areas they often fail to consider. Like Carlson, Linhoff says it’s
his goal to help people find the balance between function and
aesthetics in their design.
Linhoff notes that walk-in showers are a big trend right
now, and many people leave off a shower door so that they
maintain that walk-in feel. But as he points out, one function of
a door is to trap warm air in the shower area and keep cold air
out. Without the door, many home owners find the shower too
cold and uncomfortable — a problem that can be alleviated
with the addition of a non-water-tight door or heated flooring
and vents. Home owners also tend to neglect ceiling height
when selecting a shower door. High ceilings mean more space
between the ceiling and the top of the standard height shower
door, which can give the area an off-balance look. “Just another
six inches in shower door height changes everything,” says
Linhoff.
He also recommends clear glass over obscure glass, both
for shower doors and bathroom windows. For windows, clear
glass lets you keep the natural outdoor lighting, with a simple
addition of window treatments for privacy. In the shower area,
after you’ve spent the time and effort on installing gorgeous
tile, you want to show it off with a clear glass door that draws
the eye all the way to the opposite wall. Coatings are available
for clear glass to help the water sheet and to keep the glass
looking clean without lots of cleansers. If you’re looking to
remodel, sometimes all the shower door needs is a product like
BioClean, a hard water spot cleaner that gives you a fresh look
without having to replace the glass.

MIrrors AnD FIxtures

The style of your home will help determine what types
of mirrors you use. Wall-length mirrors that stretch to the
ceiling make the room look larger and require less lighting,
giving your master bath an open, flowing atmosphere, but
Linhoff says they are seeing fewer requests for this type
of mirror in recent months. Instead, many are opting for
framed, decorative mirrors. He also notes that the current
trend in fixtures and trim is a dark brown color, rather
than gold, chrome or even recently popular nickel.
Updating your fixtures and trim is the easiest way to
give your master bath a “cosmetic tune-up,” according to
Linhoff. He says that if you’re working on a budget, rather
than remodeling the entire bathroom, you can replace the
shower door for one with an updated frame and change
out the towel bar, toilet paper holder and other fixtures
for a new look. Changing your mirror does wonders, as
well. Instead of going to a retail store to buy a new framed
mirror, he suggests using Mirrorscapes, a product that
reframes your existing mirrors for a custom look at half
the price of a new mirror.
Solatube is another product that can drastically enhance
the effect of lighting in your master bath. Many people
with homes built in the 1970s have a bathtub with a
window over it, and they are choosing to remodel with a
stand-alone shower — but at the loss of the window and
its natural light. Solatube helps you keep the natural light
with the feel of a skylight, and it is relatively simple and
inexpensive to install as a feature in your remodel.
In the end, whether your bathroom is traditional in style
or incorporates the clean lines of contemporary design,
the most important consideration is how it works for you.
“It’s easy to create a beautiful room,” says Carlson, “but you
need to create beauty in the eye of the client. When they
look at it, they need to feel good about it.”
