Concentration
My concentration focuses on women. I wanted to convey the many unique types of
women, depicting them in various environments and situations from fantasy and
mythology to literature, eventually isolating the figure with little to no background for
emphasis. Throughout the process, as I painted each piece, I tried to illustrate each
scenario with techniques and materials that best told the individual's story. Each piece
has a unique style with which it depicts each situation.
In pieces 1 and 2, I showed women in mythology. I experimented with watercolor
and different mixed-media elements to create a lighter color scheme and simpler
design to evoke a fantasy-like environment.
Next, I moved into examining women in literature in pieces 3 (based on “Aunt
Jennifer’s Tigers” by Adrienne Rich) and 5 (based on Medea by Euripides). Both of
these writings describe the confinement and past position of women as the lesser sex.
Since these focus on a more serious topic, I chose to use oil paint to establish darker,
richer colors and more detail. Because these works are also fictional, I continued to
employ mixed-media elements with a more abstract depiction.
Pieces 6 and 7 transition from exploring woman in fictional environments to focusing
only on the woman interacting with her environment. I used space and movement to
tell the story.
Finally with pieces 8 through 12 I deliberately concentrated on the individual. I
painted as realistically as possible with minimal embellishment and simple
backgrounds to emphasize the uniqueness of each woman's face and body.
