A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

• Sarmiento, Jann Kenneth A.
• Zantua, Lyka M.
4. • The Philippines is home to a diverse array of indigenous cultures,
each with its own unique traditions, languages, and beliefs. Some
of the most well-known indigenous groups include the Aeta, the
Mangyan, and the Igorot.
5. • Indigenous peoples have made significant contributions to Philippine
culture, including in the areas of music, dance, art, and cuisine.
6. • Folk Catholicism is a syncretic form of Christianity that is
prevalent in the Philippines. It combines elements of Catholic
doctrine with traditional indigenous beliefs and practices.
7. • Folk Catholicism is characterized by its emphasis on devotion to
saints and the Virgin Mary, as well as its belief in miracles and
other supernatural phenomena.
8.
9. • Indigenous communities and cultures have responded to the influx of
foreign influences in a variety of ways. Some have adopted aspects
of foreign cultures, while others have resisted change. Some have
tried to find a balance between the two.
How they responded:
• Adoption
• Resistance
• Balance
10. • The Ifugao people of the Cordillera Mountains have adopted some
aspects of Christianity, but they have also maintained their traditional
religious beliefs and practices.
11. • The Lumad people of Mindanao have resisted attempts by the
Philippine government and multinational corporations to exploit their
land and resources.
12. • The Tausug people of Sulu have found a balance between their
traditional Islamic culture and the influences of other cultures, such as
the Spanish and the Americans.

centuries of intermarriage with other groups, including European
settlers(such as Spain), Western settlers (Americans) and Asian
immigrants.
• Aboriginal culture is dynamic and evolving. It has been influenced
by other cultures throughout history, and it continues to evolve today.
• Aboriginal peoples are a diverse group. There is no single
"aboriginal culture." Each aboriginal group has its own unique culture,
language, and traditions.
15.
16. • Sto. Niño played a significant role in rooting Catholicism in the
Philippines. It was a powerful symbol of the new religion, a source of
comfort and hope for the Filipinos, and a tool used by missionaries
and the Spanish government to promote their goals.
17.
18. • Catholicism was adapted and indigenized in the Philippines in a
number of ways. This adaptation was necessary in order to make
Catholicism more appealing to the Filipinos and to convert them to
the Christian faith. The Catholic Church was successful in adapting
and indigenizing Catholicism in the Philippines, and today, the
Philippines is one of the most Catholic countries in the world.
19. • Feast of the Black Nazarene
Filipinos are patient, tolerant and forbearing people. They can take so
much abuse and sufferings just like Jesus did during his passion,
crucifixion, and death on the cross. Similarly, Filipinos show how they
can identify by enduring a procession lasting up to 22 hours.
20.
21. • Peñafrancia Festival
In Naga, however, these seemingly “secular” events are often spoken
about as heartfelt forms or proofs of the people’s devotion to Ina.
Participants in these events often wear headbands or carry banners
printed Viva la Virgen or Viva el Divino Rostro.
22.
23. • Santo Niño Festival
Other cities in the Philippines, including Malolos, Bustos, Kalibo,
Tacloban, Panay and Bacolod, have their own particular images of the
Santo Niño, many dating back to the 16th century. Each of these also
has its own feast, as does Manila’s Tondo church, which houses an
image known as Santo Niño de Tondo brought to the country in 1572.
