For the past 6 years, OMBO has coordinated the Fabric of Cal fashion show. One of the most anticipated events of Caltopia, the Fabric of Cal is designed to showcase the diversity of Cal students, staff, and faculty, and features stylish, licensed Cal-logoed and fashion apparel in a high-energy setting. On August 25th, 2008, the Fabric of Cal 2008 theme focused on “Making a Difference.” As the global community is impacted by increasing environmental and social pressures, OMBO wanted to showcase how UC Berkeley is responding in a positive manner to effect change and how each person can make a difference. This year, we asked our models and sponsors to identify how they contribute to the community. Singly and together, we can make a difference.

Outward Bound Adventures (OBA) is a nonprofit organization that provides outdoor experiences and self-mastery skills training to underserved youth. Due to a merger with Outward Bound ending, OBA must rebrand and establish its independence. The strategic plan proposes rebranding simply as "OBA" to clarify its separation from Outward Bound. It also recommends updating OBA's mission, vision, and programs to expand its geographic focus and better serve youth and families. I boiled down our culture strategy into 10 essential components I call the \"10 Cs of Culture.\"
1. Core Values
I used to be very cynical about \"core values.\" I thought these were just mottos written on
plaques hanging on the wall. But when we implemented our values strategy at Beryl about 10
years ago, I began to see how they guided everyday decision-making and how employees
referenced them in meetings. I came to realize they are essential guideposts when developed,
communicated, and executed in a consistent manner. Values are those behaviors that will never
change no matter how the company changes. Today, our values are not only painted on the
walls, but also discussed from the first day an employee joins Beryl. We start every big meeting
with a conversation about values and tell stories about how our coworkers live by those values
on a daily basis.
2. Camaraderie
Camaraderie is about having fun. It\'s about getting to know colleagues not just as colleagues,
but what they\'re like outside the office. To do that, Beryl hosts dress-up days, parties, games,
and events all the time. We have annual traditions like family day, the Gong show, March
Madness, the fall festival, and a holiday party. We include not only employees, but also their
families. We publish a bi-monthly full-color magazine called Beryl Life that is sent to the homes
of co-workers. Kids of our employees compete to design the t-shirt for our annual family day
and families even participate in our talent show
3. Celebrations
You can\'t underestimate the importance of recognizing your team. While it may be important
for your people to hear from the CEO, it also feels great for them to hear from peers. At Beryl,
we developed a program we call PRIDE (Peers Recognizing Individual Deeds of
Excellence). This allows coworkers to recognize others for living up to Beryl\'s core values. We
also have quarterly contests for people who have received PRIDE certificates. We go out of our
way to celebrate personal successes too, like baby showers, sports accomplishments, or
educational milestones.
4. Community
Part of the fabric of a successful company culture is connecting with and giving back to the local
community. Even though Beryl is a national company serving national customers, we have
dedicated countless hours to community service in Bedford, Texas (where Beryl is based) to help
those in need. This not only helps the organization\'s Beryl support, but brings great pride to
staffers.
5. Communication
At Beryl, I encourage formal and informal communication consistently and at all levels of the
company. I hold quarterly Town Hall meetings, which includes six meetings over two days. This

Purpose and History of the Fabric of Cal
This is the sixth Fabric of Cal fashion show,
presented by the Office of Marketing &
Business Outreach. OMBO is the group which
manages the campus’ brand and engages in
cause‐related activities. Their mission
statement: “Promoting Excellence. Inspiring
Change,” is evident in today’s fashion show.
The Fabric of Cal is designed to highlight the
diversity of Cal. This year’s theme is “Making a
Difference” and we will be sharing stories from
our diverse and talented models. If you’ve ever
asked yourself, “What can one person do?” just
listen to these stories, and you will be inspired.
Even if it’s taking a few extra steps to recycle
that soda can instead of tossing it in the nearest
trash can, you HAVE made a difference!
4. Making a Difference by supporting health/wellness,
community, and diversity!
My name is Devin Wicks, and I am your
host. I work at the RSF as the Director of
Fitness Operations. We provide world class
fitness and wellness programming,
including personal training, instructional
classes, employee fitness and wellness
programming through our WorkFIT
program, offering you the best opportunity
to get active and have fun on your path to
health and wellness.
I also work with various Cal athletic teams,
including some of the newest Cal Olympic
medalists, and I am the assistant coach for
the Cal Dance team which works hard at
every football and basketball game to inspire
Cal spirit. For the past two years, I’ve
organized the Cal AIDS/Lifecycle team
which includes fellow alums, faculty/staff
and Cal students. Together, we’ve raised a
combined total of over $120,000 for the SF
AIDS Foundation. Go Bears! !

initiatives!
Carol is the Alumni Relations and Events
Manager in Student Musical Activities, and
works with the Cal Band, UC Choral Ensembles,
and UC Jazz Ensembles. She works on behalf of
Cal staff by serving as a member of the Berkeley
Staff Assembly Coordinating Committee and the
Fund Raising Council.
In addition, Carol is participating in the campus
Leadership Development Program, working with
a team of seven other staff on recommendations
for “Green Computing” at Cal. Carol is wearing

Della, an Operations Supervisor for the
Payroll Unit of RSSP, is wearing a set of soft

time, Della works on behalf of staff in
planning the Cal Summerfest and has served
as treasurer of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
(Solano Valley Alumnae Chapter) for the past
3 years.

partner of the Breast Cancer Research

Rishi, a first year majoring in MCB.
Although only a freshman, Rishi plans
to continue the cancer research he
started in high school. Also, while still
in high school, Rishi founded the
Boulder Interact Community Service
Club which involves high school
students in community service projects.
He was also active in Boy Scouts and
volunteered as a cook in a homeless
shelter. We’re glad he chose to come to
Cal and that he plans to continue his
service activities. Cal has a long, proud
tradition of volunteerism, and Rishi
will fit right in!

Abba Modern (a Christian dance group), and is an
ASUC Intern.

Karen is a second year majoring in
Psychology. She is a member of the
Cal Dance Team and a volunteer
ESL tutor at Berkeley High School.
Karen is outfitted in a 100% organic

Exchange learned of our fashion
show, they produced this shirt
exclusively for this purpose. Cotton
Exchange products are made in the
US, and the company employs
almost 700 skilled craftspeople.

Katherine, a second year Cal student
on the Cal Dance Team and is active in
Delta Gamma sorority, participating in
various fundraising and community
service events, such as Anchor Slam
which raises funds for Service for Sight.

Clara is a second year, majoring in
Cognitive Science and is also a member
of the Cal Dance Team. She is an intern
at ASTIA, a non‐profit that helps
women‐founded technology start‐up
companies gain access to funding and
business expertise. Clara is also a Relay
for Life captain. Relay for Life is a 24‐
hour walkathon which raises money
for the American Cancer Society.

Rachel is a third year majoring in
Theater, Dance & Performance Studies.
She is also the historian for Pi Beta Phi
sorority and a member of the Cal Dance
Team.

Danielle is a typical Cal student with a
wide range of interests. A second year
undeclared major, her other interests
include cheering on Cal Football as a
member of the Cal Dance Team and
serving as a volunteer with the
Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship
Association activities.

Elaine, a third year pre‐med student with an
intended major in Practice of Art. She is also
on the Cal Dance Team and a member of
Movement Dance Group.

is both comfortable and stylish, and will soon

blend of polyester and organic cotton, which
uses 60% less chemicals than other cotton
products.

Karisa is a second year majoring in
Engineering Physics. A few of her
extra curricular activities include being
co‐manager of the UC Women’s
Chorale and leadership team chair for
her church.
Karisa’s outfit is perfect winding down
