NVIS (Near-Vertical Incidence Skywave) propagation allows for local to medium distance amateur radio communications between 0-250 miles by transmitting signals at a high angle that return from the ionosphere at a similar angle. This fills in the "skip zone" of ordinary propagation where signals pass through the ionosphere at a low angle. To use NVIS successfully, the antenna must radiate signals at a high angle and the correct frequency band must be chosen, which is typically 10% below the critical frequency of the F2 ionospheric layer, depending on the time of day, year, and solar cycle. Common antenna choices are dipoles lowered to around 1/4 wavelength high.
