EDITORIAL BOARD
Long before ASEAN integration became
today’s catchword, Saint Joseph Institute of
Technology (SJIT) has already been front and center
of engineering global affiliation sweeping continents
today having pioneered in quality maritime
education in Caraga region.
Today, the SJIT Graduate School is continuing
this visionary tradition.
To begin with, the SJIT Graduate School is an
International Standard Organization (ISO) certified
institution. Since 2013, SJIT has been an ISO-9001
-2008 Standard certified institution by the TUV
Rheinland, a global provider of technical, safety and
certification services. The scope of certification
covers Education and Training particularly in the
College Courses and the Graduate Schools of SJIT,
an accomplishment that has landed SJIT in the
map of select ISO accredited academic institutions
recognized all over the world. As a result, a graduate
from SJIT, is assured not only of quality education
but recognition and acceptance to jobs not only in
the Philippines but in other countries as well.
Just this year, the SJIT Graduate School
surpassed the Level 1 status of accreditation to the
Ph.D. in Management, Master of Arts in Education
and Master in Management of the Graduate School
Programs as granted and approved by the Federation
of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP)
as recommended by the Association of Christian
Schools, Colleges and Universities Accrediting
Agency Inc. (ACSCU-AAI) in May 2015. The
Level 1 accreditation was awarded to SJIT Graduate
School for having satisfactorily met the standard
and fulfilled the requirements of the ACSCU-AAI
in accordance with the Memorandum Order # 01 s.
2015 of the CHED.
To complement this, SJIT Graduate School
have in its rooster leaders and high caliber experts
who have converged to form not only a highly
educated and qualified but as well as committed and
value oriented faculty. As a result, the institution has
produced (and continues to produce) quality alumni
who are successful in their careers and ready to
journey not only within Caraga region and ASEAN
but to the far reaches of the earth.
Even then, it not SJIT’s character to rest
on its laurels. In fact, it has prepared for the
implementation of the K-12 system of Basic
Education and the Graduate School is in the middle
of seeking CHED accreditation for Master of Arts in
Teaching English, Mathematics, Filipino, and Values
Education (MAT) Program.
Yes, SJIT continues to transform to adapt to
ASEAN and even beyond.

INNOVATION AT WORK
by Maria Cherry A. Serrano
Our professor, at the end of each
session, would coyly announce, “Alright,
get 1/4 sheet of paper. Let’s have a quiz. 9
questions, true of false. No. 10 would be a
bonus point”. Eagerly we scampered to
secure paper from our classmates.
Yes, folks, you got me right. This
scenarios happened in our Ph.D. classes with
Dr. Freddie C. Mero (DPM 207- Seminar on
Entrepreneurial Skills and DPM 213- Phil.
Business Environment). We had quizzes
every Saturday. One might think that those
quizzes were as easy as eating peanuts. Mind
you, his questions were all well-thought-of,
mind-boggling, catchy and tricky. Only
the very few who attentively listened to the
lectures and reports, and carefully analyzed
and dissected every question could get the
perfect score of 10 and those who made
excellent reflections could ultimately get the
most coveted grade of 1.0.
This is the reason why our classes with
Dr. Freddie C. Mero were so challenging,
and yet full of fun with his antics. He would
call the roll in the morning and in the
afternoon. If one came in late, he/she would
be marked “J.I.L.” (for “Jesus, I am Late”).
Once, a student tried to insist that she was
not tardy. Lo and behold!, Dr. Mero got
his tablet and showed his evidence- a snap
shot he had taken during that particular
session, proving that she was not around
when he called the roll. His style of teaching
kept us on our toes in a very positive way.
He diligently corrected and returned the
reflection papers we made each week. It
was so elating for those who got the 100%
mark and at the same time challenging for
those who did not, trying to figure out how
to get the most desired 100% mark on the
next assignment. The room would be full
of excitement and anticipation for those
moments whenever Dr. Mero would finally
reveal the names of those students who were
voted “Best Reporters” by the class. Everyone
needs affirmation from our colleagues from
time to time, right?
Dr. Freddie C. Mero talked with
authority. He came to class well-prepared.
His lectures were current, relevant and well-
researched. He is indeed an expert in the
fieldheisteaching. Heisthebranchmanager
of the Development Bank of the Philippines-
San Francisco Branch, San Francisco,
Agusan del Sur. He is the president of the
Agusan del Sur Chamber of Commerce and
Industries Foundation, Inc. He was awarded
as an “Outstanding Butuaon” this May 2015
and one of the “Outstanding Alumni”
during the recently held Grand Alumni
Homecoming of the SJIT where he finished
both his Masters Degree and Ph.D. He is an
inspiration to all of us. He inculcated upon
us that we should not content ourselves to
be just mere employees. We should cultivate
the entrepreneurial spirit in us, to evolve
and innovate, and to become significant
members of our society.
As he would always say at the end of
our class, “See you when we’ll see you, sir.”
For the first time in the Philippines, the Saint Joseph
Institute of Technology (SJIT) successfully hosted the
regional series of convention on education in Butuan City
on May 22-24, 2015.
Dubbed the “WCCI Regional Seminar-Workshop
on Education,” Graduate Schools Dean Dr. Clara D.
Almendralejo, in behalf of the management of SJIT, and
the graduate school faculty led the hosting of the event
participated in by hundreds of graduate school students
and guests from various academic institutions in the
Visayas, Mindanao and Caraga region.
No less than World Council for Curriculum and
Instruction (WCCI) International President Dr. Teresita
P. Pedrajas and WCCI Philippines President Dr. Emerita
I. Garon graced the event with the theme, “ASEAN
Integration: Opportunities for Peace and Global Education.”
In her speech, Dr. Garon said, “WCCI has always
brought critical and relevant educational issues and agenda
during our conferences to challenge educators to come up
with relevant recommendations so that we can contribute
to the fulfillment of the country’s educational goals.” Garon
said, that while ASEAN Integration “posed a very big
challenge,” it also gives gives “many opportunities to us.”
Meanwhile, the lineup of top caliber speakers were
academic luminaries led by Former Career Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Philippines to
Asian and African countries Hon. Rosalinda Valenton
Tirona who impressed the participants with her extensive
knowledge about ASEAN Integration, its history, crafting
of agreements from the Bali Concord I, its goals and
ultimate objectives
Former Department of Education Secretary Fe
Hidalgo was very informative when delivered the Plenary
Talk, The Senior High School Curriculum: A Tool for
ASEAN Integration.
Outstanding Teacher Awardee and President
of Metrobank’s Network of Outstanding Teachers and
Educators Dr. Allan B. de Guzman also electrified the
participants with his spirited talk on the Power Teacher:
Balanced Teaching of the Soft Skills and Technical Skills
while Asian Institute of Management Project Manager Dr.
Rene Bersoto enlightened his audience with the Plenary
Talk: Opportunities in ASEAN Integration.
Capping the four-day seminar workshop was the
Alice Miel Lecture of WCCI International President
Teresita P. Pedrajas and the presentation of outputs by
various Special Interest Groups (SIG) representing early
childhood education, community development, ethics
and values, environmental concerns, women in education,
global education and peace education.
The WCCI was founded in the United States in the
early 70’s and has held 16 world conferences. It is a non-
government organization (NGO) of the United Nations.
It is committed to the achievement of a just and peaceful
world community through dialogues and exchange of ideas
on educational and social issues of a global nature.

Visits PHILRICE Mushroom Culture and Production Site
The dynamic Dean of the
Graduate School of Saint Joseph
Institute of Technology (SJIT) Dr.
Clara D. Almendralejo, together
with MM 112 professor Dr. Elena
L. Paulma, recently initiated a
fieldtrip study on mushroom
production with the Master in
Education (MAED) MM112
students and Barangay Captain
Crecencio Eda, Punong Barangay
of Barangay Bit-os, the adapted
barangay of SJIT, at PHILRICE, in
the Municipality of RTR, Agusan
del Norte.
The Graduate students
learned from PHILRICE that
mushroom production is one of the
most economically viable process
for bioconversion of Agricultural
and Industrial lignocellulosic or
plant dry matter (biomass) such
as rice straws. PHILRICE said,
rice straws is very well suited for
growing edible mushroom and
is very abundant in rural and
rice growing areas. This is very
significant to rice farmers who,
instead of just letting the straws
dry in the sun or leave them to rot
in the fields, they can still make use
of, what they may have previously
thought as waste materials, and
make money by using these things
in mushroom production .
According to RGD Belen
M. Tabudlong of PHILRICE, the
aim of the station is to produce
mushrooms owing to its demand
due to its economic and nutritional
value. Tabudlong said, mushroom
is a good source of high quality
protein and contains anti-oxidants
that reduce risk of a heart disease.
It offers a high value metabolites
and has an important role in
reaching the diet goals the people
suffering from protein deficiency.
Through mushroom production,
PHILRICE aims to generate
income, develop value–added
production and enhance the use
of resources in the environment,
Tabudlong said.
The other important
objectives in mushroom
production is to generate
livelihood to the farmers and to
recycle waste product such as rice
husks into additional profit.

GS studes join CARAGA
BUSINESS confab
by Rebecca T. Montante
The Saint Joseph Institute of Technology
(SJIT) Graduate School students joined the
Caraga Business Conference held in San
Francisco Agusan del Sur on June 16, 2015.
The students who belonged to the
subject DPM 213, The Philippine Business
Environment under Professor Freddie C.
Mero, formed part of the invited guests of the
said event.
During the conference, the students were
oriented on the different issues that have far
reaching implications to the business industry
in Caraga region among others, the ASEAN
Economic Integration.
Among the distinguished guests invited
to the conference was Davao City Mayor
Rodrigo R. Duterte who discussed Peace and
Order as Key to ASEAN Partnership and
Competitiveness.
The participation of the students allowed
them to fully understand the ASEAN economic
opportunity and gave them an advantage on
becoming one of the great entrepreneurs in
Caraga if not in the country.
It also offered them great opportunity to
learn and eventually work steadfast in bridging
the region towards the ASEAN competitiveness
and eventually into the business of the global
market.
The Caraga Business conference is a
unified effort of the government and key
business stakeholders of Caraga Region to

The New SJIT Library
by Ma. Lourdes P. Apego
The Saint Joseph Institute of
Technology (SJIT) main library recently
underwent a major transformation.
Now located at the third and fourth
floors of the NJS Building, the newly
refurbished library merged the graduate
school library, the Central Library and the
Filipinana collection.
According to head Librarian Nancy
O. Go, a major change that can easily be
observed in the newly renovated library is its
arrangement and design.
At present, the library can now be
accessed through a main door located at the
third floor of the building which used to have
its main entry in the floor.
A concrete stairway found at the
third leading to the fourth floor was also
constructed to allow students easy access to
more references found upstairs.
Go said, the new arrangement will
give library personnel single control of the
entranceandexitofthelibraryandminimizes
the number of personnel manning the area.
Another major development is
the computerization of the library and
the implementation of the computerized
attendance log in.

When our Editor-in-Chief told me to write
an article about Dr. Freddie C. Mero, I felt I could
do justice in making a feature story regarding
this professor. I had been his student since my
masteral days in this institution in 2011 until
my last subject with him, DPM 213-Philippine
Business Environment, this summer.
Dr. Freddie C. Mero never came to class
late. He was always well-prepared with his
lectures which were current, relevant and
interesting. He “introduced” us to Henry Sy,
John Gokongwei, Lucio Tan, Bill Gates and to
other bigwigs as we learned how these business
tycoons attained their success. Dr. Freddie C.
Mero talked with authority. He is indeed an
expert in the field he is teaching. Though “he
meant business” in class, he knew when to
inject humor to soften the mood. We laughed
at his antics. We even seriously considered
his practical advices like buying inverter air-
conditioning units instead of the non-inverter
ones because according to him, it would reduce
our energy consumption. When he shyly shared
with us that he bought a new silver car for his
wife, Crisilda Dolores Usi Mero, when they
celebrated their silver wedding anniversary, we
admired him more for being such a romantic
and adoring husband.

His work and his active church involvement
brought him to many wonderful places around
the globe like U.S.A, Sri Lanka, Singapore,
Taiwan and Malaysia, to name a few. Despite
his very hectic schedule, he and his wife were
able to raise four good children, two of whom
are already Doctors of Medicine, James Nathan
Joseph Usi Mero, 28 years old and Fresel Angeli
U. Mero, 27 years old. Anna Laurice U. Mero
is the 24-year-old daughter who finished a
degree in Bachelor of Science in Information
Technology, now a flourishing entrepreneur.
Fred Gabriel U. Mero, the youngest, is twelve
years old.
Dr. Freddie is the sixth child in a brood
of eleven. His school teacher father instilled in
him the discipline essential to his success. His
market vendor mother exposed him to the world
of business and numbers. Even in his younger
years, he persevered in order to succeed. He
would walk his way home from school to save
the money his mother gave him. He graduated
class salutatorian in the elementary and class
mathematician in high school. His brilliance
Freddie C. Mero, Ph. D.
earned him a full scholarship at the Mindanao
State University, Marawi City. His diligence,
focus and strong determination brought him
the laurel of success when he finished his
degree in Bachelor of Science in Agricultural
Engineering in 1981. He garnered numerous
awards from work and community. This year, he
was a recipient of two very prestigious awards:
the “2015 Ten Outstanding Butuanons Award”
given by the city government of Butuan, and
the “Outstanding Alumni Award” during the
recently held Grand Alumni Homecoming of
the SJIT. He surely is a stellar product of the SJIT

Through this innovation, books and
other reference materials can be easily
accessed and traced while library patrons can
be easily accounted.
Go revealed that the library had been
provided with ten new computer units and
an internet connection from a new service
provider.
The SJIT main library is currently
being managed by one Head Librarian, one
Assistant Librarian, five support staff and
three student assistants.
Go reminds library patrons that the
facility now strictly implements its policy
on taking out and returning of books where
graduate students can bring out books for
a period of one week without penalty while
undergraduate students for three days
without penalty.

Presentation during the graduate school program.
AIM HIGH FOR THE DREAMS OF LIFE AND THE
PURPOSE.
What is expected from a graduate student of Saint
Joseph Institute of Technology (SJIT) is the essence of the
Graduate School Orientation Program and Induction of
Graduate School Student Organization (GSSO) Officers
conducted at the SJIT Multi-Purpose Room on August 7,
2015. The purpose was to inform the newly enrolled as well
as returning graduate students about the culture and, most
importantly the policies, rules, life purpose, vision, mission,
and the core values of SJIT.
No less than the Dean of the Graduate School, Dr.
Clara D. Almendralejo discussed the management system
step by step. Dr. Almendralejo explained clearly and at
length the policies of the school. She also informed us
about the importance of being a good follower. She said, “As
professional students of this institution, Graduate School
students should be loyal wholeheartedly to the rules of the
school in order to achieve the desired goals and objectives of
every endeavor and to be ready to fight for challenges.”
I am amazed at the dedication and commitment of all
the people involved in the staging of a successful program that
enables the graduate students to be more inspired. Through
the information we had acquired during the orientation,
the students were fully convinced that it is worth enrolling
at SJIT and, as one of a graduate students of this institution,
I am convinced to pursue my studies to become a quality
teacher and productive individual in molding the children in
a way the SJIT develop their graduate students.
During the orientation the GSSO Officers were also
inducted into office and I was among the inductees being the
Treasurer of the organization.
We are so grateful and thankful to all the
people for making the program possible especially
to DR. CESAR C. EUSTAQUIO the Vice President
for Academic Affairs (VPAA) and to our dynamic,
brilliant and ever energetic with benevolent heart
Dean of the Graduate School DR. CLARA D.
ALMENDRALEJO and also to our ever equally
brilliant and wholeheartedly dedicated to her
commitment, our professor DR. ELENA L. PAULMA.
To all the graduate student it’s time to shine,
continue your journey of life with your purpose, and
spread your wings to reach your destination. Be a
worthy, quality and holistic teacher in 21st century.

Foreign Language class culminates with a showcase of
talent and language prowess

The Chinese-Mongolian Folk Dancers together with the
Graduate School Dean - Dr. Clara D. Almendralejo and
Ms. Zuseth P. Allen, DPM 216 Class Instructor.
The DPM 216 class, Foreign Language (Mandarin
Chinese) culminated in a showcase of talent and language
prowess held last April 11, 2015 from 9:00 A.M. -12:00
noon at the Grand Palace Restaurant, Montalban Street,
Capitol Drive, Butuan City.
The culminating activity was a moment of showing
off what the students have learned in the class in terms
of the spoken Chinese Mandarin Language – from the
doxology, words of welcome, song and dance numbers,
speeches, and parlor games.
The occasion was honored by the presence of the
SJIT Graduate School Dean- Dr. Clara D. Almendralejo.
During the activity, a group of students gracefully
performed a Chinese-Mongolian Folk Dance. Experts
believed that creating a connection between language
and movement can help our brain retain and recall more
information easily.
A soulful voice filled the venue when Ms. Zuseth P.
Allen, the class instructor, sung Zhi Shao Hai You Ni (Only
to Have You). As the class instructor, Ms. Allen teaches
the subject in a fun and interactive way. According to her,
“One of the best techniques a person can use to speed up
second language acquisition is through cultural immersion”.
Hence, a variety of activities were given during class time
and these were showcased by the students during the
culminating activity.
A group singing of “Wo de gēshēng li (You Exist
in My Song)” concluded the first part of the program. It
was then followed by a series of parlor games which were
actively participated by the students. A sumptuous lunch
took place after the fun-filled activities.
Although many studies revealed that it is easier for
children to learn a second language, the DPM 216 class
has proven that it is certainly never too late to learn one.
