This document summarizes a classroom activity designed to help education students visualize how Stanovich's four factors of reading development - cognitive consequences, developmental change, reciprocal causation, and organism-environment correlation - differently influence each student's reading history. Students used play dough to represent the four factors around "history circles" on a paper, creating a "flower garden" visualization of diverse student histories. The activity helped students see each student as a unique "flower" requiring individualized support to develop reading skills.

School officials can conduct searches of students that are reasonable in scope based on the circumstances. The Supreme Court ruled in New Jersey v. T.L.O. that searches only need to be reasonably related to the objectives and not excessively intrusive, with individualized suspicion not required. Strip searches are only permitted in extreme health and safety situations. Random drug testing of student athletes was upheld in Vernonia v. Acton since expectations of privacy are lower for athletes. However, drug testing should avoid punishing students and distance them from school personnel.

The document presents a dissertation proposal that investigates the impact of high school mathematics curricula on the performance of African American students on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Exit-Level mathematics test. The proposal outlines the problem of low performance and participation of African American students in advanced mathematics courses. It presents four research questions and hypotheses that examine the relationship between course tracking, performance, and advancement. The proposal also reviews relevant literature and describes the proposed correlational research design using student data and a counselor survey.
This case involves a homeschooled student, Annie Swanson, whose parents wanted her to take some classes, like foreign language and science, at the local public school. The school district had a policy that students must attend full-time. Annie's parents sued, arguing this policy violated their constitutional rights. The court sided with the school district, finding that parents do not have the right to pick and choose specific classes or control every aspect of their child's education if it conflicts with the school's authority over curriculum and resource allocation.
This document summarizes a case study examining the impact of elementary school principals' leadership behaviors on school culture and climate. The study analyzed principals' scores on the Leadership Profile assessment, which evaluates behaviors in building relationships, organization, decision-making, and goal achievement. It found that the principals' scores on structure and authority most influenced teachers' perceptions and the school culture. While principals were usually aware of their own preferred behaviors, they lacked awareness of how behaviors driven by underlying needs and stresses impacted faculty trust and relationships. This highlights the importance of principals understanding how their personal behaviors shape school culture and climate.

The document summarizes the 1968 Supreme Court case Green v. County School Board of New Kent County. It discusses how New Kent County in Virginia maintained a segregated school system with one all-white school and one all-black school, despite the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. To comply with desegregation orders, the school board implemented a freedom of choice plan that allowed students to choose which school to attend but did not result in desegregation. The Supreme Court ruled the plan unconstitutional, stating school boards must take effective steps to transition to a nondiscriminatory system.
Dr. William Allan Kritsonis has had a long and distinguished career in education. He has held professorships at several universities and currently teaches at Prairie View A&M University, where he chairs doctoral dissertations. This dissertation examines the differences between administrators' self-perceptions and faculty/staff perceptions of administrators' transformational leadership styles at a community college district in Texas. Surveys were administered to administrators, faculty, and staff. Results found a statistically significant difference between administrators' self-ratings and faculty/staff ratings of administrators' transformational leadership. However, no significant differences were found based on gender, ethnicity, or length of service of either the administrators or faculty/staff. The study aims to provide insight into effective leadership styles to contribute to organizational change at community colleges.

This study examined differences in leadership styles between principals in high and low performing elementary schools in West Virginia. Teachers completed a survey to rate their principal's leadership across four frames: structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. Principals in high performing schools were found to use all four frames significantly more than principals in low performing schools. Additionally, female principals used the human resource frame more than males, rural principals used the political frame more than urban principals, and small school principals used the human resource frame more than medium school principals. The study recommends training for principals in the four leadership frames to help improve leadership skills and student achievement.
