Luis envisions cities of the future with megacities and higher populated areas. Citizens will be more involved with nature and renewable energies while technology advances areas like robotics, nanotechnology, and virtual reality. Education will increasingly utilize virtual classrooms, retinal screens, and online learning to provide higher levels of education. Medicine will see advances like nano-surgery, 3D printed organs, and better public healthcare while addressing new diseases. Transportation will focus on high-speed travel, electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and more eco-friendly options like electric cars and increased bicycling.

Depending on your framing, the coming age of Artificial Intelligence is either the panacea to all the worlds drudgery or heralds the arrival of our robot overloads and ultimate annihilation.
The truth is clearly somewhere in between, and depends a lot on a careful definition of terms, but either way the arrival of Artificial Intelligence and it’s subordinate cousins Machine & Deep Learning, presents a seismic shift and one which demands our immediate and focused attention.
Artificial Intelligence is here and it’s already doing interesting things, from influencing your Facebook feed to influencing US elections, from predicting your text messages to predicting where extreme weather events will hit, from recognising your voice to recognising endangered tigers.
And that’s just single purpose AI, stuff gets real when we begin to join a few of these ‘intelligences’ together, and Artificial General Intelligence emerges. AGI is still the realm if sci-fi, but for how long and what are the implications?
For the next Greenhouses evening we’ve approached a range of academics and thought-leaders to help us explore this fascinating topic, and help guide us as we decide how we can shape Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in to Planet Saving Technologies. This presentation is a submission to the IE Business School for an application of GMBA (October 2016). The aim of the presentation is to provide a possible vision of the future megacities, in the light of recent economic, technological and environmental developments.
Keynote talk for NCRM Stream Analytics workshop, 19 January 2017, Manchester.
My talk is called "New and Emerging Forms of Data: Past, Present, and Future” and I will be giving a perspective from my role as one of the ESRC Strategic Advisers for Data Resources, in which I was responsible for new and emerging forms of data and realtime analytics. The talk also includes some of the current work in the Oxford e-Research Centre on Social Machines (the SOCIAM project) and an introduction to the PETRAS Internet of Things project.
The talk raises a number of important issues looking ahead, including massive scale of data that is already being supplied by Internet of Things, the implications of automation in our research, reproducibility and confidence in research results. I will also ask, how can the new forms of data and new research methods enable social scientists to work in new ways, and can we move on from the dependence on the traditional investment in longitudinal studies?

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
