4. Exposition (Initial Situation)
Tom and Edward are born. One is rich, and one is poor. The rich one is the Prince of
Wales, and the poor one only dreams of one day even seeing a real-life prince. That's
about all you need to know about these two kids.
Rising Action (Conflict, Complication)
Tom and Edward meet, and coincidence of all coincidences, they look actly alike.
Since the grass is always greener on the other side, they agree to switch roles for just
a little while. But unfortunately for the prince, things go way further than he expected.
It's not so easy to convince everyone you're royalty when you look like a beggar and
everyone wants to dump chores and abuse on you.
5. Climax (Crisis, Turning Point)
King Henry VIII has died, and everything has been leading up to the coronation of
the new king. Just when it seems that all is lost, and Tom will be forced to become
King of England, Edward shows up. He convinces the court that he's the real king,
and everything is gravy after that. This is both the tensest and the most awesome
part of the whole book.
Falling Action
Edward wraps up some of the story's loose ends. Miles gets his knighthood and his
lady. Tom gets some special status and freedom from his abusive father. All those
silly archaic laws are abolished. Finally, stuff is starting to calm down in merry old
England.
Conclusion
Edward only reigns for a few years before he dies, but they are years marked by
peace and justice. His memory lives on in the minds of English people.
6. Edward Tudor, Prince of
Wales The main character,
the prince referred to in the
title of the novel. Having
spent his entire life in the
c o n f i n e s o f t h e r o y a l
a p a r t m e n t s , h e h a s
daydreamed about the
freedom experienced by
boys such as Tom Canty.
7. Tom Canty The other main
character of the novel; as a
pauper's son, he has been
brought up in one of the most
disreputable parts of London
and has spent much time
daydreaming about living the
life of royalty.
8. London
London is the city in England where
the two main characters, Tom Canty
and Edward Tudor, were born. The
author describes it as a nice place
for the time, which was the mid-
1500s, but it is dirty and has narrow
streets and many slums. On the
other hand, it also is home to rich
merchants and nobility, who live in
sumptuous mansions. The city is
surrounded by a wall for protection
against enemies.
9. Offal Court
Offal Court is at the end of
Pudding Lane in a very poor
part of London where Tom lives.
It is a place full of drunken
brawls and rioting, where many
people are beggars and
thieves. Tom's house is a small
and run-down tenement filled
with many families crammed
together in abject poverty.
