Internet usage has skyrocketed in the past few decades, along with this increase comes the increase in internet shopping by consumers. This research examines the behaviors, motivations, and attitudes of this new form of consumer entity. Online consumer behavior has been studied for over 20 years and will undoubtedly be the source of many future researches as internet consumerism expands. This paper will examine the following research questions: (1) How do factors previously researched affect the online purchasing behavior of consumers and (2) what are the significant consumer behaviors both positive and negative that affect internet consumerism? By identifying these factors and variables, new strategies can be formulated and both consumer and supplier can gain knowledge and understanding of behaviors which exist. Introduction
Coffee has become an integral part of the lives of numerous people. In 1971, Starbucks coffee opened its first coffee shop in the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. Now, according to research “Starbucks Corporation is the leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee in the world, with more than 6,000 retail locations in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific Rim” (www.investor.starbucks.com). Starbucks aims to be the consumer’s favorite coffee shop and to achieve this the company focused on customer satisfaction as well as company advancement. Therefore, it is important to act based on what is written in Starbucks mission, value and vision statement, “To inspire and nurture the human spirit-one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time” (www.starbucks.com).
A review of Starbucks financial reports has identified an increase in revenue over the past few years. However, this increase in revenue doesn’t account for the increase in profits. The profit increase is not as high as it could be due to external factors such as other coffee shops and the increase in amount of competition. This report aims to identify the different internal and external environment factors attributing to the changes in Starbucks external environment by utilizing several different analyses.
SWOT Analysis
Strengths
Starbucks possesses several main strengths including their high visibility being located in high traffic areas, quality of service and products and their established brand loyalty. Starbucks remains an established leader being the number one known coffee house in the world while possessing a competent workforce, providing quality service, and continuing financial soundness. They also are known for their strong internal and external relationships with their suppliers.
Weakness
Weaknesses that Starbucks must address include: Product affordability and pricing, coffee beans price is the major influence over the firms profits, maintaining the positive public opinion of their products, avoiding any negative publicity, and remaining connected to their customers. Starbucks must also consider the fact they have expanded domestically and internationally resulting in saturation of the markets. They are also a non-smoking facility alienating some customers from purchasing coffee or other products from their store.

The honey caves have a specific and trademarked design that makes customers feel “like a bee in a hive”. The Lied (pronounced “leet”) blended German poetry with piano collaboration. Lieder represent an intimate genre of music utilizing a solo singer partnered with piano. In most cases, the piano acts as more than mere accompaniment as it is able to musically enhance the text, depict moods and atmospheres, and in some cases represent a character in the poem.
For this assignment you will choose any threeLieder and write a 2-3 page paper (double spaced, 12 point font with 1 inch margins) based on the following guidelines to include in your paper:
1. Read the translation of the poetry and establish your own interpretation. Are there any words or phrases that lend themselves to musical depiction? If you were the composer how might you musically depict words or phrases or the mood/ atmosphere of the piece using only one singer and a piano?
2. Listen to the Lied and follow along with the translation. How does you analysis from Question 1 differ or parallel the composer’s interpretation?

An explanation is a statement that provides a reason for why or how something became the way it is. Arguments present a conclusion that's presumably new to you and then support this conclusion with evidence that you're likely to believe. Sometimes the facts make the explanation quite clear:

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the united states (AFSP, 2014). And the third leading cause among youth and young adults (Wharff, Ross, & Lambert, 2014)
Research shows 90% of those who have died by suicide had a potentially treatable mental illness (AFSP, 2014).
Prevention starts with awareness and education.
Risk Factors may include mental disorder, previous attempts, family history, serious medical condition or pain. These factors combined with environmental stimuli increase chances of suicide and suicide attempts (Carlborg, Winnerback, Jonsson, Jokinen & Nordstrom, (2010).
Research
Maria’s focus has been in the community prevention. The barriers of suicide documentation in the Philippines has encouraged her research in using psychological autopsy’s to evaluate a course of intervention (AFSP, 2014). Psychological autopsies have been used to present evidence of mental disorders present in those who died from suicide based on a collection of interviews and reports to dictate what they may have thought (Hjelmeland, Dieserud, Dyregrov, Knizek & Leenaars, 2012).
Michael has focused his research in the use of pharmacology in suicide prevention. Giving participants a prescribed amount of lithium has shown great strides in lowering future suicide attempts and depressive behaviors (ASFP, 2014).
Comparison
Maria has strong views in behavior aspect of study. She has culminated research of behaviors related to mental disorders and compared them to suicide reports made from informant interviews and medical documents. She uses such information to hopefully reduce the suicide rates in the community by early diagnosis and treatment prevention.
Michael uses his successful career in clinical psychology to establish the benefits of treating mental disorders to prevent suicides and suicidal behaviors. He focuses his research to provide evidence of pharmacology on disorders. His goal it to use such evidence to reduce thoughts of suicide and attempts.

Trevor Baylis was quite a swimmer in his youth, representing Britain at the age of 15. So it wasn’t entirely surprising that he ended up working for a swimming pool firm in Surrey before setting up his own company. He continued his swimming passion – working as a part-time TV stuntman doing underwater feats – but also followed an interest in inventing things. One of the projects he began work on in 1991 was to have widespread impact despite – or rather because of – being a ‘low-tech’ solution to a massive problem.
Having seen a documentary about AIDS in Africa he began to see the underlying need for something which could help communication. Much of the AIDS problem lies in the lack of awareness and knowledge across often isolated rural communities – people don’t know about causes or prevention of this devastating disease. And this reflects a deeper problem – of communication. Experts estimate that less than 20% of the world’s population have access to a telephone, while even fewer have a regular supply of electricity, much less television or Internet access. Very low literacy levels exclude most people from reading newspapers and other print media.
Radio is an obvious solution to the problem – but how can radio work when the receivers need power and in many places mains electricity is simply non-existent. An alternative is battery power – but batteries are equally problematic – even if they were of good quality and freely available via village stores people couldn’t afford to buy them regularly. In countries where $1 a day is the standard wage, batteries can cost from a day’s to a week’s salary. The HIV/AIDS pandemic also means that household incomes are under increased pressure as earners become too ill to work while greater expenditure goes towards healthcare, leaving nothing for batteries.
What was needed was a radio which ran on some different source of electricity. In thinking about the problem Baylis remembered the old-fashioned telephones of pre-war days which had wind-up handles to generate power. He began experimenting, linking together odd items such as a hand brace, an electric motor and a small radio. He found that the brace turning the motor would act as a generator that would supply sufficient electricity to power the radio. By adding a clockwork mechanism he found that a spring could be wound up – and as it unwound the radio would play. This first working prototype ran for 14 minutes on a two minute wind. Trevor had invented a clockwork (wind-up) radio! As a potential solution to the communication problem the idea had real merit. The trouble was that, like thousands of entrepreneurs before him, Trevor couldn’t convince others of this. In previous experiments, we have investigated electric charges largely under stationary conditions. These
studies were useful in order to illustrate concepts such as the electric potential and the electric field, and

processing of information. To enable this, electricity must be handled in circuits, a closed loop of
conducting wire connecting power plant with individual homes, and businesses. To appreciate this
phenomena, it is useful to investigate various aspects of simple circuits and the various laws that may
govern them.

Our initial investigations will be guided by Ohm’s law, which postulates that the relationship between

these materials is constant. Manufactured resistors can be considered as such, but other components such

This dialectic should not look like the typical childhood debate: “YES. NO. YES. NO.” You should not simply state a side and then write the inverse. Instead, you should invent the most compelling defense for both sides. Where students misstep here is in the unfortunate habit of writing weak counterpoints - something “stupid” that’s easy to rip apart. Right? We’ve all done this in essays that require counterpoints. Why that doesn’t work for this essay is that it would essentially mean that HALF of your essay is intentionally “stupid”... This doesn’t make for a good college paper. Instead, you must argue both sides so well that the reader cannot tell which is actually your own position.
To build this paper over the next two weeks, you should be exploring as many points (and counterpoints) as you can imagine in your homework assignments. In your final essay, I would like you to try to compile what you believe to be your best ideas.

Picket Fence Free Fall
We say an object is in free fall when the only force acting on it is the earth’s gravitational force.
No other forces can be acting; in particular, air resistance must be either absent or so small as to
be ignored. When the object in free fall is near the surface of the earth, the gravitational force on
it is nearly constant. As a result, an object in free fall accelerates downward at a constant rate.
This acceleration is usually represented with the symbol g.
Physics students measure the acceleration due to gravity using a wide variety of timing methods.
In this experiment, you will have the advantage of using a very precise timer connected to the
calculator and a Photogate. The Photogate has a beam of infrared light that travels from one side
to the other. It can detect whenever this beam is blocked. You will drop a piece of clear plastic
with evenly spaced black bars on it, called a Picket Fence. As the Picket Fence passes through
the Photogate, the LabPro or CBL 2 interface will measure the time from the leading edge of one
bar blocking the beam until the leading edge of the next bar blocks the beam. This timing
continues as all eight bars pass through the Photogate. From these measured times, the program
will calculate the velocities and accelerations for this motion and graphs will be plotted.

Object: The object of this experiment is to measure the tensile properties of two polymeric
materials, steel and aluminum at a constant strain rate on the Tension testing machine.
Background: For structural applications of materials such as bridges, pressure vessels, ships,
and automobiles, the tensile properties of the metal material set the criteria for a safe design.
Polymeric materials are being used more and more in structural applications, particularly in
automobiles and pressure vessels. New applications emerge as designers become aware of
the differences in the properties of metals and polymers and take full advantage of them. The
analyses of structures using metals or plastics require that the data be available.
Stress-Strain: The tensile properties of a material are obtained by pulling a specimen of
known geometry apart at a fixed rate of straining until it breaks or stretches to the machines
limit. It is useful to define the load per unit area (stress) as a parameter rather than load to
avoid the confusion that would arise from the fact that the load and the change in length are
dependent on the cross-sectional area and original length of the specimen. The stress,
however, changes during the test for two reasons: the load increases and the cross-sectional
area decreases as the specimen gets longer.
Therefore, the stress can be calculated by two formulae which are distinguished as
engineering stress and true stress, respectively.

Structural members are usually designed to carry tensile, compressive, or transverse loads. A member which carries load transversely to its length is called a beam. In this experiment, a beam will be symmetrically loaded as shown in Fig. III-1(a), where P is the applied load. Note that at any cross section of the beam there will be a shear force V (Fig. III-1(b)) and moment M (Fig. III-1c). Also, in the central part of the beam (between the loads P/2) V is zero and M has its maximum constant value. Notice the sign convention of a positive moment, M, causing a negative (downward) deflection, y.
If in this part a small slice EFGH of the beam is imagined to be cut out, as shown, then it is clear that the external applied moment, M, must be balanced by internal forces (stresses) at the sections (faces) EF and GH. For M applied as shown in Fig. III-2(a), these forces would be compressive near the top, EG, and tensile near the bottom, FH. Since the beam material is considered elastic, these forces would deform the beam such that the length EG would tend to become shorter, and FH would tend to become longer. The first fundamental assumption of the beam theory can be stated as follows:
“Sections, or cuts, which are plane (flat) before deformation, remain plane after deformation.”
Thus, under this assumption, the parallel and plane section EF and GH will deform into plane sections E’F’ and G’H’ which will intersect at point O, as shown in Fig. III-2(b). Since E’F’ and G’H’ are no longer parallel, they can be thought of as being sections of a circle at some radial distance from O. Convince yourself of this by drawing a square on an eraser and observe its shape when you bend the eraser. Since the forces near E’G’ are compresiive, and those near F’H’ are tensile, there must be some radial distance r where the forces are neither compressive nor tensile, but zero. • Identify the type of experimental design to be used in the proposed study. The types available in experiments are pre-experimental designs, quasi-experiments, true experiments, and single-subject designs. With pre-experimental designs, the researcher studies a single group and provides an intervention during the experiment. This design does not have a control group to compare with the experimental group. In quasi-experiments, the investigator uses control and experimental groups but does not randomly assign participants to groups (e.g., they may be intact groups available to the researcher). In a true experiment, the investigator randomly assigns the participants to treatment groups. A single-subject design or N of 1 design involves observing the behavior of a single individual (or a small number of individuals) over time.
• Identify what is being compared in the experiment. In many experiments, those of a type called between-subject designs, the investigator compares two or more groups (Keppel & Wickens, 2003; Rosenthal & Rosnow, 1991). For example, a factorial design experiment, a variation on the betweengroup design, involves using two or more treatment variables to examine the independent and simultaneous effects of these treatment variables on an outcome (Vogt, 2011). This widely used behavioral research design explores the effects of each treatment separately and also the effects of variables used in combination, thereby providing a rich and revealing multidimensional view. In other experiments, the researcher studies only one group in what is called a within-group design. For example, in a repeated measures design, participants are assigned to different treatments at different times during the experiment. Another example of a within-group design would be a study of the behavior of a single individual over time in which the experimenter provides and withholds a treatment at different times in the experiment to determine its impact.
• Provide a diagram or a figure to illustrate the specific research design to be used. A standard notation system needs to be used in this figure. A research tip I recommend is to use a classic notation system provided by Campbell and Stanley (1963, p. 6):

INTRODUCTION AND THEORY
In this experiment, a mass of lead in a crucible will be heated to its melting point and a transducer will be inserted in the lead. The heating is then ceased and the data of temperature versus time are accumulated by some data-acquisition system of your choice.
It is known from thermodynamics that when two bodies at different temperatures are in contact, heat will flow from the hotter body to the cooler one in a process known as Heat Transfer. The rate of this heat flow depends upon the temperature difference and thermal resistances in much the same way that electric current depends upon the potential difference (voltage) and electrical resistances. In solids, heat transfer occurs by molecular motion in a process called conduction, whereas in fluids, such as air and water, heat is transferred by fluid motion in a process called convection. 2. Objective: The purpose of this experiment is to understand how
voltage is affected by the loop rule and node rule in different
configurations of circuits. We will use Arduino measure the voltages
across different circuit configurations where the resistors are either in
series or parallel.
3. Experiment Description:
Set up (Ref. 1: video description):
1. Connect the ground pin from the Arduino to the main bus of the
breadboard with a wire.
2. Connect the positive bus and the 5V slot with a wire.
3. Place the two 10 kilo-Ohm resistors in series on the breadboard
(from end to end).
4. From the positive bus (5V source), connect a wire to one end of
the resistors (not between them). Remember electrical
connections on the rest of the breadboard run perpendicular to the
bus.
5. Now connect a wire from the end of the 2nd resistor (again not
between the resistors) to the ground (main bus).
6. Place a wire in the middle of the resistors and connect it to the
Analog pin A0. This wire will be referred to as the measurement
wire as you will use it to probe the voltage readings around the
circuit.
7. Use the code in figure 1 (from the youtube video) for measuring
voltage. Upload this to your Arduino IDE. Note that this code
will be used throughout the experiment as it works regardless if
the resistors are in series, parallel, etc. NOTE: You create this
code by modifying AnalogInOutSerial found by the path:
Open!Analog!AnalogInOutSerial in the Arduino IDE.
8. Connect your Arduino to your computer via USB.
9. Compile your code in the IDE by clicking verify (check mark
icon in top left). Then upload (run) the code to your Arduino
(rightward pointing arrow).
10. Use the measurement wire to take the voltage reading around the
resistors. NOTE: click the serial monitor in the top right corner to
view your voltage readings.
11. After measuring the voltage for series, create a parallel circuit,
and a combinational circuit of parallel and series and measure the
voltage readings for both circuits. You should check voltages
around the circuit; i.e. use the measurement wire to probe the
voltage at the ends, in between the resistors, etc. NOTE: For a
circuit with a combination of resistors in parallel and series you
will need at least three resistors. It’s OK to use only two resistors
for the first two configurations.

resource. These instructions are largely meant to supplement the
directions on the video.

In most cases, the piano acts as more than mere accompaniment as it is able to musically enhance the text, depict moods and atmospheres, and in some cases represent a character in the poem.
For this assignment you will choose any threeLieder and write a 2-3 page paper (double spaced, 12 point font with 1 inch margins) based on the following guidelines to include in your paper:
1. Read the translation of the poetry and establish your own interpretation. Are there any words or phrases that lend themselves to musical depiction? If you were the composer how might you musically depict words or phrases or the mood/ atmosphere of the piece using only one singer and a piano?
2. Listen to the Lied and follow along with the translation. How does you analysis from Question 1 differ or parallel the composer’s interpretation?
3. Pay particular attention to the relationship between the voice, text, and piano keeping in mind the piano offers more than just harmonic support. Provide examples of how the piano enhances the text, creates a mood or atmosphere, or depicts a character from the poem.
4. Does the musical and vocal setting suit the poetry? Explain.

Qualities of Explanations
An explanation is a statement that provides a reason for why or how something became the way it is. Arguments present a conclusion that's presumably new to you and then support this conclusion with evidence that you're likely to believe. Explanations work the other way around: they start with a conclusion that you likely believe (e.g., the sky is blue) and then offer an explanation for why that is so (e.g., because God is a UNC fan).
We will be looking specifically at causal explanations—that is, explanations in which you suggest that a particular physical or behavioral phenomenon is the result of another event.

As with all critical thinking, you'll need some judgment here. Discard the implausible theories (at least initially) and give fair consideration to all the reasonable ones:
· State your theory clearly (make a hypothesis).
· Consider possible alternatives.
· Look at the evidence.
· Evaluate the theory.
Sometimes the facts make the explanation quite clear:
I can see a train moving through an intersection several hundred yards ahead. That explains why traffic isn't moving.
Other times, you'll need to employ inductive reasoning to establish the most likely cause:
I can't see the tracks from here, but I drive through here every Saturday morning and usually a train was responsible for traffic being stalled. So it's probably a train.
We are presented with many such explanations on a daily basis.

Consistency
First, is it internally consistent or does it contradict itself?

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the united states (AFSP, 2014). And the third leading cause among youth and young adults (Wharff, Ross, & Lambert, 2014)
Research shows 90% of those who have died by suicide had a potentially treatable mental illness (AFSP, 2014).
Prevention starts with awareness and education.
Risk Factors may include mental disorder, previous attempts, family history, serious medical condition or pain. These factors combined with environmental stimuli increase chances of suicide and suicide attempts (Carlborg, Winnerback, Jonsson, Jokinen & Nordstrom, (2010).
Research
Maria’s focus has been in the community prevention. The barriers of suicide documentation in the Philippines has encouraged her research in using psychological autopsy’s to evaluate a course of intervention (AFSP, 2014). Psychological autopsies have been used to present evidence of mental disorders present in those who died from suicide based on a collection of interviews and reports to dictate what they may have thought (Hjelmeland, Dieserud, Dyregrov, Knizek & Leenaars, 2012).
Michael has focused his research in the use of pharmacology in suicide prevention. Giving participants a prescribed amount of lithium has shown great strides in lowering future suicide attempts and depressive behaviors (ASFP, 2014).
Comparison
Maria has strong views in behavior aspect of study. She has culminated research of behaviors related to mental disorders and compared them to suicide reports made from informant interviews and medical documents. She uses such information to hopefully reduce the suicide rates in the community by early diagnosis and treatment prevention.
Michael uses his successful career in clinical psychology to establish the benefits of treating mental disorders to prevent suicides and suicidal behaviors. He focuses his research to provide evidence of pharmacology on disorders. His goal it to use such evidence to reduce thoughts of suicide and attempts.

Trevor Baylis was quite a swimmer in his youth, representing Britain at the age of 15. So it wasn’t entirely surprising that he ended up working for a swimming pool firm in Surrey before setting up his own company. He continued his swimming passion – working as a part-time TV stuntman doing underwater feats – but also followed an interest in inventing things. One of the projects he began work on in 1991 was to have widespread impact despite – or rather because of – being a ‘low-tech’ solution to a massive problem.
Having seen a documentary about AIDS in Africa he began to see the underlying need for something which could help communication. Much of the AIDS problem lies in the lack of awareness and knowledge across often isolated rural communities – people don’t know about causes or prevention of this devastating disease. And this reflects a deeper problem – of communication. Experts estimate that less than 20% of the world’s population have access to a telephone, while even fewer have a regular supply of electricity, much less television or Internet access. Very low literacy levels exclude most people from reading newspapers and other print media.
Radio is an obvious solution to the problem – but how can radio work when the receivers need power and in many places mains electricity is simply non-existent. An alternative is battery power – but batteries are equally problematic – even if they were of good quality and freely available via village stores people couldn’t afford to buy them regularly. In countries where $1 a day is the standard wage, batteries can cost from a day’s to a week’s salary. The HIV/AIDS pandemic also means that household incomes are under increased pressure as earners become too ill to work while greater expenditure goes towards healthcare, leaving nothing for batteries.
What was needed was a radio which ran on some different source of electricity. In thinking about the problem Baylis remembered the old-fashioned telephones of pre-war days which had wind-up handles to generate power. He began experimenting, linking together odd items such as a hand brace, an electric motor and a small radio. He found that the brace turning the motor would act as a generator that would supply sufficient electricity to power the radio. By adding a clockwork mechanism he found that a spring could be wound up – and as it unwound the radio would play. This first working prototype ran for 14 minutes on a two minute wind. Trevor had invented a clockwork (wind-up) radio! As a potential solution to the communication problem the idea had real merit. In previous experiments, we have investigated electric charges largely under stationary conditions. These
studies were useful in order to illustrate concepts such as the electric potential and the electric field, and

to electrostatics (charges confined to be stationary), the field of electricity deals with the flow (induced
movement) of electrical charges. Due to its many uses, most individuals knowingly or unknowingly have

processing of information. To enable this, electricity must be handled in circuits, a closed loop of
conducting wire connecting power plant with individual homes, and businesses. To appreciate this

govern them.

Our initial investigations will be guided by Ohm’s law, which postulates that the relationship between
current flow I, potential difference V, and resistance R for certain materials will observe the following

These materials are called Ohmic conductors, equation 1 implies that the ratio of voltage to current for
these materials is constant. Manufactured resistors can be considered as such, but other components such

Instead, you should invent the most compelling defense for both sides. Where students misstep here is in the unfortunate habit of writing weak counterpoints - something “stupid” that’s easy to rip apart. Right? We’ve all done this in essays that require counterpoints. Why that doesn’t work for this essay is that it would essentially mean that HALF of your essay is intentionally “stupid”... This doesn’t make for a good college paper. Picket Fence Free Fall
We say an object is in free fall when the only force acting on it is the earth’s gravitational force.
No other forces can be acting; in particular, air resistance must be either absent or so small as to
be ignored. When the object in free fall is near the surface of the earth, the gravitational force on
it is nearly constant. As a result, an object in free fall accelerates downward at a constant rate.
This acceleration is usually represented with the symbol g.
Physics students measure the acceleration due to gravity using a wide variety of timing methods.
In this experiment, you will have the advantage of using a very precise timer connected to the
calculator and a Photogate. The Photogate has a beam of infrared light that travels from one side
to the other. It can detect whenever this beam is blocked. You will drop a piece of clear plastic
with evenly spaced black bars on it, called a Picket Fence. As the Picket Fence passes through
the Photogate, the LabPro or CBL 2 interface will measure the time from the leading edge of one
bar blocking the beam until the leading edge of the next bar blocks the beam. This timing
continues as all eight bars pass through the Photogate. From these measured times, the program
will calculate the velocities and accelerations for this motion and graphs will be plotted.

Object: The object of this experiment is to measure the tensile properties of two polymeric
materials, steel and aluminum at a constant strain rate on the Tension testing machine.
Background: For structural applications of materials such as bridges, pressure vessels, ships,
and automobiles, the tensile properties of the metal material set the criteria for a safe design.
Polymeric materials are being used more and more in structural applications, particularly in
automobiles and pressure vessels. New applications emerge as designers become aware of
the differences in the properties of metals and polymers and take full advantage of them. The
analyses of structures using metals or plastics require that the data be available.
Stress-Strain: The tensile properties of a material are obtained by pulling a specimen of
known geometry apart at a fixed rate of straining until it breaks or stretches to the machines
limit. It is useful to define the load per unit area (stress) as a parameter rather than load to
avoid the confusion that would arise from the fact that the load and the change in length are
dependent on the cross-sectional area and original length of the specimen. The stress,
however, changes during the test for two reasons: the load increases and the cross-sectional
area decreases as the specimen gets longer.
Therefore, the stress can be calculated by two formulae which are distinguished as
engineering stress and true stress, respectively.

Structural members are usually designed to carry tensile, compressive, or transverse loads. A member which carries load transversely to its length is called a beam. In this experiment, a beam will be symmetrically loaded as shown in Fig. III-1(a), where P is the applied load. Note that at any cross section of the beam there will be a shear force V (Fig. III-1(b)) and moment M (Fig. III-1c). Also, in the central part of the beam (between the loads P/2) V is zero and M has its maximum constant value. Notice the sign convention of a positive moment, M, causing a negative (downward) deflection, y.
If in this part a small slice EFGH of the beam is imagined to be cut out, as shown, then it is clear that the external applied moment, M, must be balanced by internal forces (stresses) at the sections (faces) EF and GH. For M applied as shown in Fig. III-2(a), these forces would be compressive near the top, EG, and tensile near the bottom, FH. Since the beam material is considered elastic, these forces would deform the beam such that the length EG would tend to become shorter, and FH would tend to become longer. The first fundamental assumption of the beam theory can be stated as follows:
“Sections, or cuts, which are plane (flat) before deformation, remain plane after deformation.”
Thus, under this assumption, the parallel and plane section EF and GH will deform into plane sections E’F’ and G’H’ which will intersect at point O, as shown in Fig. III-2(b). Since E’F’ and G’H’ are no longer parallel, they can be thought of as being sections of a circle at some radial distance from O. Convince yourself of this by drawing a square on an eraser and observe its shape when you bend the eraser. Since the forces near E’G’ are compresiive, and those near F’H’ are tensile, there must be some radial distance r where the forces are neither compressive nor tensile, but zero. • Identify the type of experimental design to be used in the proposed study. The types available in experiments are pre-experimental designs, quasi-experiments, true experiments, and single-subject designs. With pre-experimental designs, the researcher studies a single group and provides an intervention during the experiment. This design does not have a control group to compare with the experimental group. In quasi-experiments, the investigator uses control and experimental groups but does not randomly assign participants to groups (e.g., they may be intact groups available to the researcher). In a true experiment, the investigator randomly assigns the participants to treatment groups. A single-subject design or N of 1 design involves observing the behavior of a single individual (or a small number of individuals) over time.
• Identify what is being compared in the experiment. In many experiments, those of a type called between-subject designs, the investigator compares two or more groups (Keppel & Wickens, 2003; Rosenthal & Rosnow, 1991). For example, a factorial design experiment, a variation on the betweengroup design, involves using two or more treatment variables to examine the independent and simultaneous effects of these treatment variables on an outcome (Vogt, 2011). This widely used behavioral research design explores the effects of each treatment separately and also the effects of variables used in combination, thereby providing a rich and revealing multidimensional view. In other experiments, the researcher studies only one group in what is called a within-group design. For example, in a repeated measures design, participants are assigned to different treatments at different times during the experiment. Another example of a within-group design would be a study of the behavior of a single individual over time in which the experimenter provides and withholds a treatment at different times in the experiment to determine its impact.
• Provide a diagram or a figure to illustrate the specific research design to be used. A standard notation system needs to be used in this figure. A research tip I recommend is to use a classic notation system provided by Campbell and Stanley (1963, p. 6):

In this experiment, a mass of lead in a crucible will be heated to its melting point and a transducer will be inserted in the lead. The heating is then ceased and the data of temperature versus time are accumulated by some data-acquisition system of your choice.
It is known from thermodynamics that when two bodies at different temperatures are in contact, heat will flow from the hotter body to the cooler one in a process known as Heat Transfer. The rate of this heat flow depends upon the temperature difference and thermal resistances in much the same way that electric current depends upon the potential difference (voltage) and electrical resistances. In solids, heat transfer occurs by molecular motion in a process called conduction, whereas in fluids, such as air and water, heat is transferred by fluid motion in a process called convection. In addition, heat is also transferred by electromagnetic radiation in transparent substances, or in a vacuum.
Consider a solid object in contact with air. If the surface temperature of the body, , is higher than the air temperature, , then there will be heat transferred from the object to the air. 2. Objective: The purpose of this experiment is to understand how
voltage is affected by the loop rule and node rule in different
configurations of circuits. We will use Arduino measure the voltages
across different circuit configurations where the resistors are either in
series or parallel.
3. Experiment Description:
Set up (Ref. 1: video description):
1. Connect the ground pin from the Arduino to the main bus of the
breadboard with a wire.
2. Connect the positive bus and the 5V slot with a wire.
3. Place the two 10 kilo-Ohm resistors in series on the breadboard
(from end to end).
4. From the positive bus (5V source), connect a wire to one end of
the resistors (not between them). Remember electrical
connections on the rest of the breadboard run perpendicular to the
bus.
5. Now connect a wire from the end of the 2nd resistor (again not
between the resistors) to the ground (main bus).
6. Place a wire in the middle of the resistors and connect it to the
Analog pin A0. This wire will be referred to as the measurement
wire as you will use it to probe the voltage readings around the
circuit.
7. Use the code in figure 1 (from the youtube video) for measuring
voltage. Upload this to your Arduino IDE. Note that this code
will be used throughout the experiment as it works regardless if
the resistors are in series, parallel, etc. NOTE: You create this
code by modifying AnalogInOutSerial found by the path:
Open!Analog!AnalogInOutSerial in the Arduino IDE.
8. Connect your Arduino to your computer via USB.
9. Compile your code in the IDE by clicking verify (check mark
icon in top left). Then upload (run) the code to your Arduino
(rightward pointing arrow).
10. Use the measurement wire to take the voltage reading around the
resistors. NOTE: click the serial monitor in the top right corner to
view your voltage readings.
11. After measuring the voltage for series, create a parallel circuit,
and a combinational circuit of parallel and series and measure the
voltage readings for both circuits. You should check voltages
around the circuit; i.e. use the measurement wire to probe the
voltage at the ends, in between the resistors, etc. NOTE: For a
circuit with a combination of resistors in parallel and series you
will need at least three resistors. It’s OK to use only two resistors
for the first two configurations.

resource. These instructions are largely meant to supplement the
directions on the video.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
