Experiment 12.3
Law of Reflection
LO : To be able to carry out a practical to
investigate the Law of Reflection
End of the experiment :-
I can compare the angle of incidence of a light beam with its
angle of reflection (L5)
I can describe reflection at a plane and use the Law of Reflection
(L6)
I can develop skills in measuring accurately and evaluate my
practical (L7)
QUIZ
Complete the sentences below :-
• Light travels in a
- straight line
• Law of Reflection states that
- angle of incidence = angle of reflection
Procedure
• Draw a line on a blank piece of paper
• Place the back surface of the mirror onto the line
• Using a light box, direct a single light ray at an angle towards the mirror
• Draw two small dots along each light ray
• Remove the light box and the mirror
• Using a ruler, connect the dots with straight lines
• Using a protractor, draw in a normal and measure and record the angle of
incidence and angle of reflection
Result
(Follow this table for your practical)
Angle of Incidence, i (°) Angle of Reflection, r (°)
Discussion
• State whether the data seems to verify the law of
reflection (angle of incidence equals angle of
reflection within reasonable limits of error).
• What characteristic validates the law of reflection?
• Possible sources of error in the experimental results.
Homework/Future Learning
• Describe how a periscope works using Law of
Reflection.
