Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been used as an insulation material for over 60 years. It is produced by expanding polystyrene beads with steam, which causes them to expand up to 50 times their original size. EPS has beneficial properties for insulation such as high R-values, moisture resistance, and versatility. Plasti-Fab is a leading manufacturer of EPS insulation products in North America, with expertise in EPS applications for buildings and other construction projects.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Freeze-Thaw Cycling Tests Show no Loss of R-Value ...Lawrence Le Roux
The EPS Industry Alliance commissioned a study by Intertek EL SEMKO, an independent test laboratory. Intertek conducted environmental cycling tests using ASTM C1512-07, Standard
Test Method for Characterizing the Effect of Exposure to Environmental Cycling on Thermal Performance of Insulation Products.
These independent tests confirm the freeze-thaw and moisture resistance properties of EPS insulation. Test results confirm no loss in R-value or change in compressive strength for EPS.
Additionally, the results clearly demonstrate that EPS insulation does not absorb excessive amounts of moisture.

Compatibility of PV Ribbons & Fluxes with EVA Encapsulant Films - Narahari S ...ERIKA SEBENS
Conference Paper from 2016 PVSEC: Compatibility of PV Ribbons and Fluxes with EVA Encapsulant Films
Currently the reliability requirements for PV module service life are very high (for 25-30 years of service life) and packaging is the predominant cause of failure in modules. Polymer encapsulants, also known as ‘pottants’, play a key role in protecting the PV cell array modules from environmental effects such as UV radiation, moisture, extreme weather, electric leakage and wind damages. The most common polymer encapsulant in PV industry is ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Though EVAs are cheaper and versatile in its usage, they are sensitive to chemicals and other environmental factors. Ribbon and specially, flux manufacturers have to take utmost care in designing their products so that products won’t react with EVA and not suffer from reliability issues such as yellowing, thus affecting efficiency and reduced module life. Considering the flux and polymer encapsulant related compatibility concerns, a detailed study (DOE) was undertaken. The goal of the DOE was to achieve reliable solder joints with reduced yellowing of the PV module by optimizing the solder composition and flux chemistries.
The transportation market represents a very large segment where light-weighting composite solutions are progressing in mass transit and automotive applications. Inevitably, the main drivers are the reduction of fuel consumption and the need to lower CO2 emissions. In addition, OEMs and automakers are looking for enhanced parts performance and durability, better acoustics and production efficiency gains.
On the transportation market, Owens Corning offers solutions for redefined surface appearance or weight reduction without sacrificing performance, while meeting the strict regulatory constraints on fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Owens Corning innovation is backed by state-of-the-art modeling and testing capabilities.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON STRENGTH AND SCC CHARACTERISTICS OF BASALT FIBER REIN...IAEME Publication
Concrete is second most widely used material other than water, its more versatile but modern day engineering structures require more demanding concrete owing to the huge applied load on smaller area and increasing adverse environmental conditions. Many materials were studied as impregnation agents to concrete to enhance its quality, strength and durability, in this work we had tried to utilize Basalt fiber as a strength enhancement agent in Self compacting concrete to obtain higher strength values in tandem with good workability. Promising results were obtained in the self compacting nature by using simple admixtures such as VBA, workability agents etc. Rheological properties obtained suggested that the concrete is not only highly workable but also possess high durability and versatility. The SCC slump value varied from 620 to 760 mm with good compressive strength in the range of 25-32 N/mm2.
Presentation by Dr. Chris Skinner @JEC Europe 2014 on market trends for wind energy and Owens Corning integrated glass solutions to reduce the cost of wind energy for blade producers.
Presentation by Tom DeMint of Owens Corning at CAMX on October 15, 2014. As the wind power energy generation industry continues to develop, one of the main objectives of turbine rotor blade manufacturers is to reduce total energy production cost to align wind power with other energy sources. Energy produced by wind turbines is more widely available than ever before; nevertheless the industry is constantly looking for ways to further optimize the cost of energy (CoE) as one of its foremost goals. The turbine, together with its rotor blades, plays an essential role and is one of the major components of these machines in terms of cost. It generates the torque which drives the generator and is responsible for the range of conditions energy can be extracted from the available wind. Wind farms are now constructed and operate in challenging off-shore as well as on-shore locations with differing wind speed conditions. Glass fiber composite rotor blades have contributed greatly to the success of this sustainable energy source and have allowed the wind industry to make significant advances in recent times, especially in off-shore and in low-wind locations. One of the most important advances has been the progressive technology applied to the properties of glass fiber leading to the development of high modulus glass types for lighter composites offering greatly enhanced resistance to fatigue at an affordable cost. The technological advances in glass fiber properties has resulted in rotor blades of ever greater length - beyond 85m – dimensions deemed unreachable less than a decade ago. This presentationl highlights advances in the material properties of glass fiber to help designers and engineers conceive blades which are lighter yet with increased length, improved aerodynamic performance with resistance to higher, long-term fatigue loads which ultimately enables wind turbines to increase power yield and therefore reduce the cost of energy.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Cosmetic shop management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
Buying new cosmetic products is difficult. It can even be scary for those who have sensitive skin and are prone to skin trouble. The information needed to alleviate this problem is on the back of each product, but it's thought to interpret those ingredient lists unless you have a background in chemistry.
Instead of buying and hoping for the best, we can use data science to help us predict which products may be good fits for us. It includes various function programs to do the above mentioned tasks.
Data file handling has been effectively used in the program.
The automated cosmetic shop management system should deal with the automation of general workflow and administration process of the shop. The main processes of the system focus on customer's request where the system is able to search the most appropriate products and deliver it to the customers. It should help the employees to quickly identify the list of cosmetic product that have reached the minimum quantity and also keep a track of expired date for each cosmetic product. It should help the employees to find the rack number in which the product is placed. It is also Faster and more efficient way.
CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

Expanded Polystyrene-EPS-Molecules to Insulation Products & Solutions
1. Expanded Polystyrene - EPS: Molecules to Insulation Products & Solutions
Lawrence Le Roux - Plasti-Fab - Sales Manager ON & QC
1
1. EPS - A Brief History: (For detailed info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polystyrene )
German, Eduard Simon accidentally discovers styrol in 1839. About 80 years later it was
discovered that heating styrol starts a chain reaction, which produces macromolecules. This
eventually led to the substance receiving its present name, Polystyrene. EPS raw materials,
Styrene Monomer have remained consistent for +60 years.
2. Manufacturing Process for EPS:
Pre-Expansion: Upon contact with steam the pre-foaming agent pentane starts to boil and the
beads are expanded to between 40 to 50 times their original volumes.
Pre-maturing: After expansion the EPS beads undergo a maturing period in order to reach an
equilibrium temperature and pressure.
Block Moulding or Shape Moulding: EPS beads are pumped into a mould and reheated with
steam. Pre-foamed beads expand further, completely fill the mould cavity and fuse together.
The beads are moulded to form blocks or customised products. When moulded, volume of EPS
= 2% Product + 98% Air.
3. EPS Physical Properties, Benefits, Testing, Facts etc. (White EPS Insulation Products):
Versatile EPS possesses physical and mechanical properties ideal for most insulation
applications and specifications. Closed cell structure provides good strength to weight ratio.
Density: Varying Densities from 0.70 pcf to 3.0 pcf.
R-value: EPS insulation delivers constant ‘’true’’ R-value. Pentane is used to blow polystyrene
into its final lightweight expanded cellular form. During the process, pentane is replaced by air
in the small air pockets within EPS polymer matrix. The National Institute of Standards &
Technology (NIST) uses EPS as the standard test reference material for thermal

conductivity: Standard Reference Material for Thermal Conductivity (SRM 1453). Refer to
Can/ULC - S701 and ASTM C578 tables below for additional R-value information.
Does Moisture affect the Thermal Performance of EPS Insulation? Yes, minimal impact as
proven over 30 years of testing in both residential and commercial construction. Energy
Division of the Minnesota Department of Public Service found that found that seven-year-old
samples of EPS used in exterior foundation insulation showed moisture levels of only 0.13%. It
also concluded that the EPS insulation retained between 95 and 97 percent of its thermal
efficiency and that there was no effect on its thermal efficiency and that there was no effect
on its compressive or flexural strength properties.
Compressive Resistance: Varying compressive resistance options from 2.2 psi to 60 psi.
Dimensional Availability: Not many insulation types offer the dimensional availability thickness
of EPS? Moulded EPS can be offered at a thickness of up to 38’’ thick in 2’ x 8’ and 4’ x 8’
options. It provides a great option for increased R-value and void applications in commercial
and residential construction.
Green Building & Energy Efficiency: EPS is an ideal choice for green building designs, offering
tangible environmental advantages with energy efficiency, recycled content, mold resistance
and indoor environmental quality. EPS can help meet other green building goals via localized
manufacturing, which reduces the impacts of transportation and through its use in innovative
applications that improve the overall environmental performance of the building envelope.
EPS Fire Performance & Safety: Flame retardants used in foam plastic insulation allow them to
meet building code fire performance requirements when used as a component in building
assemblies. EPS insulation products contain Brominated copolymer flame retardant of less than
1 % by weight. It is recommended that expanded polystyrene should be protected by a thermal
barrier in specific applications as referenced in the International Code Council (ICC)
and Canadian Materials Construction Centre (CMCC) building codes.
Sound Transmission: As a single component, lower density EPS is poor sound barrier? Then
again, EPS or any other insulation will never be used as a single component building product in
a wall assembly? Expanded polystyrene, when used in combination with other building
materials effectively reduces the transmission of airborne sound through partitioned walls,
ceilings and floors.
Water / Moisture Resistance: EPS is non-hygroscopic and does not readily absorb moisture
from the atmosphere. Its closed-cell structure reduces the absorption and/or migration of
moisture into the insulation material. Although EPS provides a high level of moisture resistance
and breathability, recommended design practices for walls and foundations should be followed
in the selection of vapor and moisture barriers for severe exposures. Simply put, you don’t build
in a lake or swamp?
