1) A Levite woman gave birth to a son and hid him for three months to avoid killing him as was the custom. She then put the child in a basket among the reeds by the Nile river.
2) Pharaoh's daughter discovered the crying baby in the basket and took pity on him. She allowed his sister to find a Hebrew woman, his own mother, to nurse the child.
3) Moses later fled Egypt after killing an Egyptian slavemaster. He took refuge in Midian where he helped some daughters of a priest by rescuing their flock from attackers and drawing water for them. The priest invited him to stay and gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.
