1) Moses fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave. When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses. 2) God brought the Israelites out of Egypt but they would not listen to or follow His ways, so God gave them over to their stubborn hearts. 3) The Israelites were not able to enter the Promised Land because of their unbelief and disobedience during their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, even after seeing God's works. Their bodies perished in the wilderness as a result of not following God.

2. EXODUS 2:11-15
Moses Flees to Midian
11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own
people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an
Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Looking this
way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in
the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting.
He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow
Hebrew?”
14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you
thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was
afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”
15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled
from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.

if Israel would only follow my ways,

Warning Against Unbelief
7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested and tried me,
though for forty years they saw what I did.
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ”[b]

were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.
