5. Case Study Overview
Idaho Power Company is a regulated electrical power utility. Its business involves
the purchase, sale, generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in eastern
Oregon and southern Idaho. As you can easily imagine this company produces a
vast amount of data. The Idaho Power team approached ExistBI to provide ETL
Designer/Developer to support IPC’s Enterprise Data Warehouse development
efforts to ensure the data being loaded to the EDW was complete, accurate and
fully satisfies the requirements of the business.
In our initial engagement, Idaho Power were unsure exactly how long they would
require a consultant for as this was a considerable project . We took it upon
ourselves to gather the requirements on multiple calls, e-mails and agenda
amendments to establish the most powerful consulting program for success.
We provided a Certified Informatica Consultant onsite in Idaho for one year to help
the team on the ground. The ExistBI team were able to analyse the high-level source
to target documentation and translate that into ETL specifications, including the
business logic and programming logic.

Our ExistBI Consultant efficiently developed a data model, designed source to target
mapping, developed Technical ETL Specifications, developed and unit tested ETL code,
and participated in data analysis activities as were needed.
A few examples listed below:
• Help develop/support ETL reconciliations and control processes.
• Provide post go live support to assist in issue resolution.
• Responsible for analyzing data and providing business logic for data integration.
• Creation of a configuration management plan.
• Managing access and security within Informatica environments.
• Establishing Informatica connections to source and target databases.
• Training operations staff on ETL tools in preparation for post “Go Live” monitoring and
support. Assist with scheduling tools providing Informatica administrative support.
