Editor's Notes

  • #4 LYNC, suggests not only a common process for accessing those real-time communication functions, it also implies interoperability with other forms of communication that are not “real-time.” So, as a user-oriented “gateway” to legacy telephony services, the name, “Lync,” suggests more than simple integration with traditional telephony contacts, but other multi-modal options for UC.
  • #6 (Too) Many TechnologiesEnd-users and IT Staff may be OverwhelmedFor End UsersShifting Workforce: More remote users than everTypical businesses average 6 devices & 5 communication apps per personLearning curve just to be able to communicateTravel is expensive and inefficientFor IT AdminsToo much infrastructure to manage, too many user accountsTechnology that isn’t integratedA prevailing “do more with less” attitudeIT staff turnover & training issues
  • #8 Drives up ProductivityMaximize individual productivityIncrease collaboration among employees, partners and customersGet projects done faster / more efficientlyDrives down CostsReduced # of systems = reduced power, cooling, and overall infrastructure costs“Do more with less”Lower travel costsDecrease telephony/conferencing costsSpeed learning curve for new employees
  • #13 Some voice-specific features previously offered with the Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 R2 Enterprise CAL will be discontinued and only offered in the new Lync Server 2010 Plus CAL. As a result of this change, the Lync Server 2010 Plus CAL and its associated features will not be included with the Enterprise CAL (ECAL) Suite.
  • #15 To be included in this Magic Quadrant, solution providers must have at least three of these technologies in their UC solution:Voice and TelephonyConferencingMessagingPresence and IMClients (thick, thin, PDA)Communications Applicationshttp://www.gartner.com/technology/media-products/reprints/microsoft/vol10/article19/article19.html
  • #33 New Communicator phone tab provides a dial pad for those who desire it and direct access to Exchange voice mail. Users may either call voice mail, play the voice mail on their computer, or right click to open an Outlook message which includes an automatic transcription. 6 languages are supported. Although the transcription is not perfect, it is often good enough for quick review.
  • #38 Partners via web, Dial in teleconference,
  • #40 Code name “Katrina”
  • #47 More than 30 certified partners for hardware and software.
