Sylvia Earle was a pioneering marine biologist born in 1935. She took her first job with NASA and the army studying marine life. NASA later offered her the opportunity to explore the ocean depths using a submarine and diving gear. On her first submarine ride to the Indian Ocean depths, she was fascinated by the coral and sea creatures. After two weeks underwater, NASA feared she was lost but she safely returned, surprising them and sharing her joy at observing ocean life in its natural habitat. Earle continues to teach others about protecting the ocean environment.
