The Internet
The Internet has been around for over twenty years in various forms. During the past
few years, however, it has experienced phenomenal growth.
According to Communications Today, the Internet began as a military project. It was
used to connect computer networks around the world so that continuous communication was
possible. Over the years, universities, governments, and businesses began using the Internet to
link remote locations together via e-mail.
E-mail is an acronym for electronic mail, and it is one of the most widely accepted forms
of business communication. With electronic mail, messages can be sent through computers to
other users in various locations. Responses to the originator can be sent back by the computer
in a fraction of the time that it would take to mail a letter or document.
Millions of users access the information and services offered on the Internet every day.
Linking to the Internet requires little more than standard computer hardware. A keyboard,
monitor, hard drive, modem, mouse, and basic Internet software are all that are necessary to
hook up to one of the many consumer services on the Internet. Travel arrangements and
financial services can be executed with the click of the mouse.
