Every Idle Word!
Mt 12:36-37 "But I say to you
that for every idle word men
may speak, they will give
account of it in the day of
judgment. "For by your words
you will be justified, and by
your words you will be
condemned."
5. **0 How many of us here have ever said
something and right after thought “man I
wish I didn’t say that” but of course then it
was too late!
● The Bible spends a great deal of time
addressing the importance of our words!
– Js. 1:19-20 So then, my beloved brethren,
let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak,
slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not
produce the righteousness of God.
– This is brought out more in (Js. 3:1- 12)
“The need to tame the tongue!”
6. **0
“The tongue is without doubt the most
difficult member of the body to control.
It is also the most powerful member of
the body. Words have brought about
great victories and great defeats. Words
have changed the course of history”
(Expositors Bible Dict.)
●“Sticks & stones may brake my bones, but
words will never hurt me!” Is this true?
●Physical wounds will heal, but emotional...

We will be studying today what I
believe is one of the biggest dangers
facing the church!
“Self-destruction!”
●Gal 5:15 But if you bite and devour one
another, beware lest you be consumed by one
another!
●Far too many Christians have made a habit of
first destroying ourselves and second destroying
one another!
●Think sometime about how many sins deal
with our words! (Here are 20!)

The Danger of Destroying One Another!
●This was a huge problem with the church at
Corinth!
–1 Cor. 1:10-12
–1 Cor. 3:1-3
–1 Cor. 6:6-8
●After dealing with the power of the tongue
James deals with this “self- destruction!”
–Js. 3:14-4:3
–We need to be working together and not
against one another!

I. Our Words Are Important!
●We as Christians must never take lightly the words
that we speak! (Mt. 12:34-37)
–It is are words that will commend or condemn us!
●We will all answer for the lives we live!
–Rom 14:12 So then each of us shall give account
of himself to God.
–2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive
the things done in the body, according to what he
has done, whether good or bad. (Cf. Eccl. 12:13-
14)

Js 1:19 So then, my beloved
brethren, let every man be swift to
hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath!
●“This is why God gave us two ears and
one month, we are to listen twice as much
as we speak!”
●When we speak without thinking, we
often regret it!
●“Brightest links of life are broken, by a
single angry word!” (Song Angry Words)

II. Our Words Must “not” be
Improper!
● We are told to go into all the world and preach
the Gospel! (Mt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16)
– Mt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of
all the nations...”
– Mk 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all
the world and preach the gospel to every
creature.”
● Yet we are also told to go “in love!”
● There is a right & wrong way to use our words!
12. **0
Eph 4:15-16 but, speaking the
truth in love, may grow up in all
things into Him who is the head--
Christ-- from whom the whole body,
joined and knit together by what every
joint supplies, according to the
effective working by which every part
does its share, causes growth of the
body for the edifying of itself in
love.
13. **0 We do not have to go around cursing and
hollering for our speech to be improper!
●We can even be saying the right things, but for
the wrong reasons and in the wrong way!
–Tit 3:2 to speak evil of no one, to be
peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all
men.
●It is very sad that many believe it is some how
ok to talk bad about others!
–“You weren’t suppose to hear that!”
–Rather than saying “I am sorry for what I
said!”

III. Our Words Bring
Implications!
●How many of us have heard someone say, “I
don't go to church because there are only
hypocrites there?” This is often sad but true!
–I heard one preacher say, “some church
members would drown if they went out in a
thunder storm because they have their noses
so high in the air!”
●We of all people need to understand mercy
and grace!
15. **0
We must learn to speak as
Christians and not as the world!
● 2 Pet 3:11 Therefore, since all these
things will be dissolved, what manner of
persons ought you to be in holy conduct
and godliness!
● 1 Tim 2:7 for which I was appointed a
preacher and an apostle--I am speaking
the truth in Christ and not lying--a teacher
of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Conclusion:
● Truly our words are important, and we need to
be careful how we uses them!
● One day we will be called to answer for all the
foolish words we have spoken!
● The good news is that there is forgiveness
available, and that Jesus came to take our place of
punishment! (2 Cor. 5:21)
● Have you come to Jesus to be forgiven and set
free, have your foolish words been nailed to the
cross?
● For us that are Christians...
