Editor's Notes
- I represented the male gender by using a ‘detective’ character as the victim of the opening sequence and I represented the female gender as a manipulative femme fatale character.
- I represented the location as an office of an asylum on the outskirts of a city, the mostly unseen sign saying “records office, staff only” shows that the location is prohibited. The accent in which the detective character speaks in shows that the opening sequence is set in northern America. The lighting also represents the location as it shows the open sequence being set at night.
- I portrayed the male ‘detective’ character as a working/middle class man as his costume shows that he has a steady job as he is well off enough to wear a suit and hat regularly. Whereas the female femme fatale character I represented as a low class citizen as she is unemployed and so doesn’t contribute to society especially as she is in an asylum.
- I represented ethnicity in my production as conventional for the context of the 1950s as both of the actors where white.
- I represented age as conventional as they were both portrayed as being in their late thirties / early forties as they are maturely dressed. We can tell the woman is of this age as she appears on screen to be an alcoholic.
- The male character can be viewed as aggressive towards the abductors as he violently ransacks the office however, this can be construed as the necessity to explore the office and find his partner. The female character can be viewed as manipulative as she uses her connection with him as his partner to trick him into a false sense of security. She also didn’t raise the alarm when she saw someone in the office which gives the idea that she was expecting him. Her actions which can overall be construed as evil. Sidenote: represents America - Alcohol
- The male character is portrayed as a detective however, he is more anti-stereotypical as he is not actually a detective (who are more stereotypical for the film noir genre). The female character is also very anti-stereotypical as she is not a very stereotypical femme fatale character as, often in film noir, the femme fatale is the character that gets killed off. However, in my opening sequence the femme fatale murders the ‘detective’ character which, for the male role in a film noir is also not stereotypical as the detective usually lives (often to give a voice over).
