The media product uses some conventional horror film elements but also challenges conventions in several ways: 1. The creepy piano music used conforms to horror film conventions by creating atmosphere, but teenagers are featured as victims rather than mid-aged adults, allowing for greater audience relatability. 2. A ghost is used as the supernatural element, which is quite conventional, but the setting of an abandoned asylum is unusual for horror films that typically use houses or outdoor locations. 3. The target audience of older teenagers is unconventional, as horror films usually aim for mid-aged adults, in order to increase the likelihood that the target group will view the film.

2. Where our film opening
conforms

3. Music
• The way in which the music conforms with
conventions of real media products is that it’s
quite creepy and is played on the piano like
many recent horror films. We used this kind of
music because it creates atmosphere when they
are walking also it reinforces that it’s actually an
horror film.

4. Ghost
• We used a ghost as the supernatural thing that
haunts the teenagers this is because it’s quite
easy to create yet look good. A ghost is quite a
conventional supernatural being as many horror
films have done this before.

6. Characters used
• The way the characters challenge normal
convention of real media products is because
unlike normal horror films the victims of the
supernatural being are teenagers whereas
normally the victims are mid aged adults as they
relate to adults. We used these characters
because it means that the target audience will be
able to relate more to the characters.

7. Setting
• The setting is also an unusual feature of a horror
film because no horror films are set in an asylum
usually they are set in houses or outside spaces
like woods or parks. We used this setting
because it was local and we thought that it would
be a good setting for a horror film as it has all
the normal conventions of a horror setting (e.g.
abandoned, old, big)

8. Target audience
• The target audience we’ve aimed this video at is
the older teenager because we feel that this
group would be more likely to go and watch a
film. This is unconventional of what horror films
usually aim their films at which is the mid age
adult there will put our rating at 15 so our target
audience can watch it.
